I often take my Mk 2 along in the woods to gangster a squirrel if opportunity happens. I was walking down the trail to my hog trap to check it after church this afternoon and walked upon this sitting in the trail about 30 yards ahead of me as I round a corner in the trail. I braced against a tree trunk and made the shot.

Haven't had rabbit in a while. I'm thinkin' stew. :D He's big and might be a bit tough to fry.

This ain't a jack, it's a swamp rabbit (big cousin of cottontail.) We have a lot of 'em in the woods around here. They generally like swampy country or near water. I grew up on a creek bottom that had plenty of 'em. It's upland woods around here, but we're not far from Sandy Creek and there are LOTS of tanks around here (small ponds/lakes).

How were the feas? Any on him? I have been eyeing some bunny's for a few years, but was thinking about waiting till it got a little colder so the fea's weren't so bad.

Young tender fried rabbit is my favorite meat. Better than steak or pork chops any day in my book. Trouble is none of the rabbits I've killed lately were young or tender ... big ol' cane cutters.

Looks good. Hard to tell by pics how much he weighed (roughly). What's your stew recipe ? Do you brown the meat first ?

30 yds with a 22 pistol...that's something to post. My favorite use of rabbit is in the crock-pot then shredded and BBQ'd.

I'm not sure where "don't eat rabbit till it freezes outside" comes from. Domestic rabbits are raised in pens all over the country and harvested for food almost year around. I think there is something with their libido when there isn't enough daylight, so there may not be kits being born year-round. But, when they're ready, bon appetit.

Would definitely stew it, and maybe even toss it in the pressure cooker first to tenderize. Might be a little tough :)

We call them "cane cutter rabbits" in Alabama. I've killed them with a recurve bow and .357 magnum handguns. My best handgun kill was a bobcat with an RG in .22 short with a 1.5" barrel.
