I'm looking for ideas of what to buy next, I have most of the USGI guns of WWII and two AR15s one long range and one cqb setup, I have $1500 to spend but I want ideas around the $1000-$1500 range.

So if you had $1500 how would you spend it?

Edit: If its an M1A would you get a full size or a SOCOM 16?

on lasik so I could use those guns without glasses...
but on the other hand a M41 sniper would be an amazing find.

I've got about the same amount and am waiting on a new shipment of Uberti 1873 leverguns so I can spend it on that. But you seem to be into military stuff. Have you considered an M1A? That's my 2nd choice.

Its almost like you don't care what it is, you just want to spend 1500.00. Can you provide more information? Are you looking for a collectable, a historic, a long range target, a competition gun, what? Do you shoot at 100 yards, 300, or 1000? Do you own any .22 plinkers or a shotgun?
Does your collection of WWII guns include handguns and shotguns or just rifles? Are you going to just target shoot or hunt with it?

If you don't have any handguns get a 1911 in 45ACP. If you don't have a .22 get a Ruger 10/22 or a Henry H001. If you want a super cool item get a long range target in .338 Lapua Magnum or 300win mag.

On the other hand you can spend the money on ammo and just practice or buy some reloading supplies.

If I had 1500 to spend I'd get a Winchester 1885 Highwall in 45.70 or a low wall in 6.5x55 swede. Sweet but modern and historic at the same time.

I won a raffle for $2000, I spent $500 of it on things I needed, the other $1500 I was going to invest in a firearm/range toy. The problem is I can't think of anything else I need, so I'm trying to decide what I want.

As far as other types of guns, I have two shotguns a couple of different 22s and several handguns. As far as WWII guns go, I have a 1911, a smith and Wesson 1917, a wwii era M1, a Korean era M1, a 1903a1, a 1903a3, a BAR, a tompson, a 1897 trenchgun, a M1 carbine and a M1a1 carbine. Pretty much short of a grease gun I have all of those I want.

The M1a is one of a couple I've been thinking of, I was mainly just looking for suggestions for things that might have slipped my mind.

Wow, that's a great collection. The M1a is in that price range with enough left to buy a case and some ammo. It would be a good choice. So would a Luger.

On the other hand you can get a decent Mauser and a Mosin for less than 500 which would leave you with enough to get another Garand.

But you can't go wrong with an M1a, maybe even a loaded version.

I've never been very interested in mausers, and i have three mosins on layaway at the local shop and I'm not in a hurry to get them. The Luger is an interesting idea, I've always wanted a Luger and a P38. I hadn't even thought about those thanks

How are you set for ammo?
Have you ever been interested in handloading? That would get you started with top of the line equipment.

If you really don't have another gun you need, and nothing is jumping out at you that you want make sure your ammo situation is sound. You can never have too much. Store it in steel ammo cans and it will last longer than you or your grandchildren.

M14 clone. Notice I didn't say M1A - I have owned 4 M1As and have not been impressed with their quality control. Although your budget would need to beefed up some. But the M14 platform really is an excellent one, and very fun to shoot.

I'm fine ammo wise, except 5.56 but that's where my other $500 went, I can get hand loading stuff free.

If I had $1500 to spend, I'd be looking for a good semi-auto .308. Probably an AR-10 variant or an MIA.

A lot of people say M1a, I keep coming back to I could get a handgun a shotgun some new lbe and still have enough for a couple cases of 5.56 or 9mm or something else, but I also keep thinking that $100-$500 stuff doesn't take that long to save up for, $1500 stuff does

If its an M1A would you get a full size or a SOCOM 16?

I'd do one of two things: one, get a precision long range rig, probably in .308, since it is the standard starter cartridge for that kind of game. But I might look at a .260 or something else, since I reload, or a .223 for economy since the thing is mostly for paper punching anyway.

Anyway. There are plenty of gun/scope options that could get you started in that kind of shooting for $1500. A Remington or Savage heavy barreled rifle and a SWFA Super Sniper 10x scope with target turrets could easily get there under your budget.

Second option: get a National Match AR15, and start shooting Service Rifle competitions with it.

Heh! I've already spent mine...and I'm saving my bragging rights until I actually have my new baby in my hands, so you'll all have to wait to see! I promise to make my very own posting, complete with pictures!

And the beauty of it all is that I'm only going to spend about $150 on this baby...the rest is FREE due almost entirely to rewards points on my credit card!

Oh, I can't wait!

;)

You seem to like American service rifles so maybe getting a Rhodesian FN FAL would fit well in your collection? It's not American but it has fought for freedom.

You can point to it and tell your friends "That one has killed commies..."

on lasik so I could use those guns without glasses...

Make sure you use a first rate eye doctor! Lasik usually is done to correct astigmatism and give the best possible vision at distance. If you are old and have poor accommodation (need reading glasses or "cheaters" for close work) this will not help you focus on the front sight!

They can do so-called "monovision" where one eye is over corrected to see near and the other corrected as normal for distance vision, but not everyone's brain can adapt to that situation. A good eye doctor will do trials with an extended wear contact lens in one eye to see how you deal with the adaptation before doing the surgery.

The "book" is non-dominant eye near, but I tried both and much preferred dominant eye near (especially when shooting) so that is what I had done. Its added about five years to my ability to use irons, but age marches on and my near point is now a bit in front of the front sight on most guns, but an aperture (or peep) rear sight helps a lot. But pretty much now I have to factor in red dot optics or scopes if I'm going to enjoy shooting.

OTOH, if you are young and one pair of glasses is fine for both driving and near work then Lasik will be great until about age 45 or so when the presbyopia stars kicking in :(

Another thing, not everyone is a candidate for Lasik, the key is the thickness of the cornea compared to the maximum pupil diameter. My wife's long time eye doctor was pushing to do Lasik on her as she was hitting the limits of what could be corrected with contacts (legally blind without them). I had her see my eye doctor and he immediately rejected her for Lasik. After a nearly 4 month workup with her not wearing contacts, but instead a series of "cheap" glasses so she could function and to let her eyes stabilize after most of a life with contacts he agreed to do PRK. This is much more invasive and has at least a month where you can't see worth crap. My wife was crying nearly every night worrying she made a huge mistake, but when she finally healed and could see 20/25 without contacts it was almost a miracle -- she still needed reading glasses (as she did with her contacts) but she is totally thrilled with the results.

Too many Lasik mills are out there not doing the proper workup and most of the horror stories out there about Lasik are from people who would not have been candidates for it with a proper workup.

no worries, I've actually spoken with doctors and I'm a prime candidate for it, only problem is that 1500 would only cover about 3/4 of one eye lol I guess as long as it's my sighting eye I'm all good ;)

You can give monovision a try with contact lenses, worked very well for a colleague of mine. Talk to your eye doctor.

I couldn't wear contacts -- actually they were fine once they were in, but I couldn't get them out! The astigmatism correction made my vision worse as they slipped after rapid eye movements, like scanning the mirrors when driving on the freeway making the cure worse than the disease for me.
