I'll be moving from Ohio to South Dakota next month and I am trying to plan my trip. I have reviewed SD gun laws and there doesn't seem to be any restriction on the type guns I can own (hunting rifles, AR, and several semi-auto pistols), but please correct me if I am wrong. What I am worried about is driving to SD with all my guns. I have been reading up on transporting firearms and know that FOPA protects the legal transportation of guns from one location to another. I am still worried about my trip to Illinois and a hotel stay about half way. I plan on bringing all my guns into my room overnight, as I am worried about theft. Now my main question is which place would be safest to stay in term of laws/most gun friendly, Des Monies, Iowa or Omaha, Nebraska?

I don't know about the transport but you'll love it once you get here! Assuming you like bitter cold, at least!:p We don't have a lot of cultural stuff or sports (no pro teams, mediocre state orchestra) but great hunting and fishing. It would be hard to imagine a much better place to be a gun owner, either. We have "shall issue" permits that run 5 years for ten bucks and no-guns signs carry no force of law.

BTW, you aren't wrong. Pretty much everything that's legal at a federal level is legal here. You can have SBRs, suppressors, and there are no mag restrictions of any kind. OC is legal and CC is, too.

You don't mention in your post if you have an Ohio CHL or not. If you do, Ohio law requires you to notify the sheriff that issued your CHL within 45 days of your change of address. However, since Ohio does not have a non-resident license, don't be surprised if the sheriff revokes your license. Interestingly, there is no penalty for not notifying the sheriff.

A stop in Iowa it is. It is exactly half way and being there is no reason to avoid it, I'll be able to comfortably spend the night there. I am not too worried about Illinois but just worried about that what if I get stopped and harassed by the police. I'll just follow the speed limit and get in and out of the state.

I am really excited to move out there. I love to hunt and fish so I will be moving to paradise. The cold doesn't bother me much, I actually prefer it over the being hot. Phaedrus, What part of the state are you located in? I'm heading the the northern blackhills. I am leaving behind all my hunting and fishing buddies so I'll need to start finding replacements :)

Rthora. I didn't even think about the address on my ccw. I used my parents address on it, thanks for the heads up though.

Man, I envy you! I'm from west river out near Rapid City but currently live in Sioux Falls. I wish I could pick up SF and swap it and RC around! I much prefer the city of SF but it would be so great to live at the foot of the Black Hills. Not a lot of good jobs in my field in the western part of the state. Besides, I still have another year of school at least to get my Bachelor's degree (old fart that went back).

If you like to fish for trout of all kinds Deerfield lake is awesome. Lots of great fishing in the hills.

You kind of dodge a bullet weather wise, too. It's consistently colder in the east than in the west. High up in the hills you might get more cold and snow, depends on which side of 'em you live on.

There are some decent gun shops and sporting goods stores in RC. Some of the ones that used to be there when I lived in west river are gone but they have a big Scheel's and a big Cabella's store there now.
