Hi, I recently moved to Nebraska for school. For the moment, my father has all of my family's guns, but I'd like to bring one or two here to use for target practice. However, I'm not that familiar with US law for transporting guns across states. I would have to drive from Wisconsin, through Iowa, and into Nebraska.

What kind of limitations would I have? Would I have to get a license to transport them? I'm not sure where to look up information like this, so if you can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Google Firearms Owners Protections Act covers interstate transportation. The laws in the states you mention may be more lax but if you follow FOPA you're covered.

The universally safe way, legally, is for all guns to be unloaded and locked in the trunk of the car, ammo also locked in the trunk. If in a vehicle without a trunk, the unloaded guns and ammo must be in locked containers within the vehicle. Glove compartment and center console are NOT considered locked containers.

18 USC 926a (Federal law):
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/usc_sec_18_00000926---A000-.html

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.
