Hi guys, just joined the forums today. I recently inherited a Browning BAR 30-06 (civilian version) from my grandfather. I have no idea what year the gun is. If i could guess it is from the 60-70's. I recently bought a magazine (browning brand) for it because the original was missing. The magazine will pop into place but it will not close. Are the magazines universal over year models? Or will i have to find an older style magazine? Thanks for any help.

Here is a pic of the gun. Not sure if the number in second pic even helps.

Yours is a Grade II, which has not been made in about 40 years or so. They did change the magazine several years ago, but you should be able to find a replacement. CDNN used to have some for the older guns. Check with all the usual suspects (Numrich, Midway, Browning factory, Brownell's, etc.) and you should be able to find one. I had an extra for .308/.243 but gave it away not too long ago. Good luck, it is a nice rifle...

Nice and good rifle. My father has the exact same one and it works well. Also accurate enought to shoot nails holding the target at 100 yards! Some guy lost some money down that road... Hope you find a magazine and get to actually shoot that excellent rifle. Also, 30-06 is a nice thing to use for hunting many animals.

If you don't find one let me know, I've got 4-5 spares for the early guns in 30-06. Cdnninvestments.com used to have them very cheap and I bought several.

Thanks for the help guys. I will check around the net today. If I can't find one I will let you know browningguy, appreciate it. I live in Houston as well so wouldn't have to drive far :)

If you contact Browning with the serial number, I am sure they can help you. I would say it looks like it was built in the 1970's.

if you find a source, please let me know if they also have them for an early Belgium BAR in .270... I have seen a couple at outrageously high prices...

My father just aquired a 30-06 Belgium BAR, your gun's twin. It is a very very impressive gun. Use it well!!!

I own one of these as well, Grade II with engraving. Mine is a 1967 model. If I remember correctly the "M8" stamped on your barrel indicates it's a 1968 model. Browning has a serial number reference, that I'll link to you if I can find it again.

This might be silly, but because you have never had a magazine, you may not know the magazine attaches to the hinged floorplate first, then the floorplate is closed, locking the magazine in. It it rocked into place by first attaching the forward side (or bullet side vs. case head side) then snapping the other end to the floorplate. It takes some getting used to.

EDIT: Here's the link http://www.browning.com/customerservice/dategun/detail.asp?id=18

Search eBay for "browning BAR magazine" and you will find several in the low $20's.
