I'm considering swapping an SKS for a Security Six. I enjoy my SKS, but it won't do anything my M1 won't do. The Security Six won't do anything my 44 Mag won't do, with the possible exception of lasting longer. Keep in mind it would be another set of dies and bullets to buy.

Thanks!

The Security Six is a very, very fine weapon. It is one of the best double action revolvers Ruger has ever made. I have a Speed Six. It will out last me and the person I leave it to. Carry, shoot it with pride. Let the SKS go and never look back. You just cant go wrong with one of the older Rugers.

Had a security six and loved it. Shot it way more than I ever shot my GP100. It balances just right.

The whole Six series (Security, Service, and Speed models), were well designed and solidly built revolvers. The trigger pull out of the box wasn't quite as smooth as you would typically find on a comparable S&W but still very serviceable and extremely reliable. I would love to have back a few of the ones I traded or sold over the years.

Just to add to the information above, the Ruger Six-Series revolvers compare very closely to the S&W K frame revolvers. They balance well and they are great revolvers.

Years ago I bought a 2 3/4" Service-six and it was a great revolver. I think it's ever so slightly larger than the K frame but not enough to matter, certainly not as large as the L frame.

As for a trade, IMO a straight up trade would probably be fair for both ends of the deal. If you're looking for a good .357 Magnum make the trade...

24yrs ago I traded 2 SKSs for a stainless Ruger Security Six with a 2 3/4" barrel. I have had probably at least 12 more SKSs, but I still have that first Ruger Security Six.

Not that it matters, I had $125 in both the rifles and the pawn shop wanted $200 for the Ruger. He gave me a box of ammo to help even the trade.

Sounds like something I need to pursue. I enjoy the SKS, but less so than other rifles I own because I do not reload for it and doing so is cost prohibitive since they abuse the brass. I'm not really in the market for a .357 either, but don't own one and wouldn't mind it. Something else to reload for, which is never a bad thing.

unless you are referring to the SKS, that I can see, mine dinged the brass some but I reloaded for it just the same. Hard to find sometimes, the Ruger held it nicely for me.

I love the Security Six. Carried one for years before I transitioned to a Sig P220 (45 ACP) for a duty/off duty firearm.

Have three, 2 3/4, 4 and 6. They are closer to L frame than K and are just plain stout. My three six inchers (each boy now has one of them) were all more accurate than you would expect, particularly with the Skelton load of 358156 gc and 13.5 grains of 2400 (or a pinch more).
I also bought a pair of 101s, one in 357, one in 22. The big one is great, the little one suffers from a very heavy trigger pull (gunsmith helped a little).
I'd go for the deal if you could trade it even...

Definitely go for the Security Six. As others have mentioned the trigger isn't as smooth as a Smith and Wesson but it isn't bad either. With the factory grips I seem to be able to shoot mine quite satisfactorily. It's one of my favorite handguns.

I had one with the skinny wood grips, painful to shoot, got rid of it. Look for a used pre-lock S&W 686, a much better gun, IMHO.

Skinny grips can be replaced with target target style grips. I have a 4" Security Six and a 4" 586. Both are fine guns. The SS has a smaller frame and weighs less. Both are fine guns.

I have always wanted a Security Six...sooner or later I'll have one.
I had an SKS. mehh, it was OK, but nothing to write home about.

The one thing the .357-.38 S.S. revolver will do your .44 won't is allow for light .38 loads to be used as trainers in a smaller-lighter-easier to use and tote package than a full sized .44 will.

Deal fell through, but I appreciate the info shared.

Rio, you're right for the most part, but I've got some mouse fart 44 rounds loaded up for such occasions. The only downside is I don't have much 44 brass and bullets aren't cheap.

Obviously grips can be changed, I just think the S&W is a better gun. YMMV

Grips

Pacmayer also made after-market grips for the "6" series. Excellent for recoil and just a great all around set of grips.
My only 2 3/4" Security Six was bought in '76 and traded for a 9.8 Mercury outboard in '81 during my bass fishing phase. It was my first handgun larger than .22 LR and as much as I needed and used that outboard I have always missed the Ruger SS. Paying $165 new for mine spoiled me out of the $350-$450 they go for used and worn now. They are built like tanks and will last a long, long time but I've come to prefer S&Ws.

Keep looking, Tendriver. A good Sec. Six may not be the Holy Grail of revolvers, but it's not far off. I've got a 2-7/8" and a 4"; both stainless. Prefer them to my Python.

Still kick myself for passing up a NIB blued 4" Sec. Six at a gunshow 15 or so years ago. The guy only wanted $245.

If anybody here wants a first class set of Stag grips for their security six (or redhawk) look up Grasshorn Gunworks. Amazing grips. Here are mine

Way more expensive, I'll bet. This prelock business moves Smith's into collector grade pricing. My only prelock is a 8 3/8" 657, but I got it quite a bit lower than some offerings I have seen. In the 4" 357 family, I don't need a better gun than my Security Six, that looks exactly like Walkalong's...same grips. I am also in the process of adding a Service Six 4".
