Sling setup

I personally wouldn't use a sling at all in the scenario you describe. Whenever I stumble across deer while walking through brush/woods, the window of opportunity is usually quite small, especially with a range of 50 yards or less (for me). If I kick up a deer I want to be ready.

I agree - a sling on that gun, just like a HD gun, has one thing going for it - it is going to snag on everything it can when you need it most

I cannot think of any advantage to carrying a shotgun on a sling while actively hunting. Walking in to a stand, yes. Walking out when done, yes. Hunting while cruising the woods.....take the sling off and put it in your pocket.

QD sling. Great for carrying when not actively hunting. Easily removed for actual hunting. I find a traditional bottom mounting more comfortable.

Every single night I have to walk down my long driveway to lock my gate, and being that we have various 4 legged varmints, coyotes, bob cats, javelina, and even the occasional mountain lion in my neck of the woods, I always keep both hands on my SG, and the light turned on for quick target ID and acquisition.

About the best thing to do is carry in the manner that best suits your training, and according to what you need it for. For example, I would not personally sling a SG if I'm in an area where a bear attack or other type attack is possible, or if I'm hunting something, I would want it at the ready. OTOH, if I'm hiking in an area where there is no such threat, and I'm not hunting, a sling can really be nice for that.

That said, I would carry it accordingly, so as to fit the current need.
