What do you folks think of shotgun scabbards?
What are the pros/cons of using a scabbard to carry your pump gun vs a sling?

I like a sling when hunting because it is one less thing to carry or worry about. Getting the gun ready to shoot is much easier with just a sling.

On the other hand a scabbord is better for a truck gun. The scabbord will better keep the marks and dings off the gun. The scabbord is better on horseback if that is an option for you.

These are only my opinions. I am sure others will chime in.

I agree with Milkmaster and would add, while backpacking to
keep both hand free, just tie it to the pack.

I think scabbards have their place.
I walked with a scabbard on my back with a wingmaster in it and was very comfortable.
More comfortable than on a sling.
It depends if your going to have to carry it for extended periods then yes I would recommend a scabbard for your shotgun.
I Have a sling and can still use it with the scabbard.

I guess the only pro is to protect the finish from the elements during long hikes or in your car trunk and such.

The cons would be extra cost, extra weight ( extra stuff to carry, bulk, etc), and much slower for presentation.

Might be useful as a range bag instead of a traditional rifle box or bag.

Personally I see no need for it outside that role.

The obvious use for these is so you can tote your shotgun along easily while your rifle is in your hands. Of course this would denote it being used in one of those senerios frowned upon by this forum but that is their chief marketing play. Of course it would work well and any offroad vehicle like a Mule or other atv.

I picked one up at a gun show not to long ago, I've got a couple of shotguns with out sling swivel studs installed so I thought one of these would help me tote them around in the woods if i wanted to take them hunting. And the it works great.

Plus you can attach molle gear to them. I like the idea of being able to grab the scabbard and have extra ammo and supplies attached right to it.

As has been noted, the scabbard serves best in the horseback scenario, and in the tactical/3-gun competition (especially the 'trooper' division where you have to carrry all of your gear and ammo) scenario where the rifle is the primary long arm. I have one, but have yet to really give it a workout.

Thanks everybody.

Can anyone attest to the quality of a particular brand/model?

I picked up a VooDoo Tactical for $25ish. Molle on both sides and a sling. Fits my Mossy 88 with 18" barrel very well.

Those Voodoo scabbards also work great for other guns. I carry my Win 9422 in one, I love it. With a sling it seems like there's always something digging into my back.

I sometimes carry my predator shotgun in that scabbard. I find it very comfortable and it protects the SG from all the knocks and dings when getting into position and ready to call.

I hadn't thought about adding a ammo pouch with the pals system. That is a good idea.

I like them.
