Thinking about slowly customizing my wards rifle on an FN mauser 98 action so wanted to see your pictures of your custom rifles, parts you used, cost of parts, and cost of gunsmithing.

Be careful when picking a smithy. You don't really want some community collage gun smith. Be sure they have mauser experence. Not a guy that works on remington only !!

Might be worth while try'n to check with Pennsylvania gunsmith school . See if they take on outside projects in the master class or check with this list for a near by smithy.

Here's a couple I had built with the receiver (Winchester Model 70) as the starting point:

The biggest problem you will face using the Mauser 98 as your platform will be the lack of high quality aftermarket parts for your build. Be sure to buy a high quality barrel (Krieger, Obermeyer, etc.) and have your action trued prior to installing the barrel.

Do you want to customize / build this rifle or have it done? If your time, finances and lifestyle allow I would suggest you take one of the many NRA Short-Term Gunsmithing Courses available throughout the country.

Maybe close to 20 years ago I took one offered at Montgomery Community College in NC. I took a few courses there over several years and they were a blast as well as a heck of a learning experience. My brother-in-law dragged in a Swede Mauser and left with one sweet 6.5 Swede match rifle and I built my first 6mm PPC gun there. I see Mr. James Messer still teaches the Ultimate Bolt Action Rifle Accuracy Course. The guy is great!

If you just want a smith to build you a rifle be prepared to wait as all the best smiths have a long backlog.

If I did it I would probably would not go all out I would probably just send it away to get a new barrel put on and then upgrade the stock to a Boyds thumbhole and get a timney trigger when I get the money. So the only major gunsmithing work I would need is installing the barrel and maybe bedding the stock

I bought this off gunbroker, the smith is J.E. Montes. I was told the action is a FN Commercial mauser action. I would like to find out more about the smith, but I can tell you he is a Master.
