http://news.yahoo.com/senator-renew-gun-control-push-california-shooting-spree-173432763.html

Conn. Senator wants to push the same bills that were defeated last year AGAIN and uses the recent STABBING, Shooting, vehicle crush in CA. to push his gun control agenda. Funny, he ignores the knife, the car...and focuses on the guns.

He says his push is to focus on mental health but geeze, get a clue. A perfectly sane guy buys a gun and two years later cracks. A looney buys an illegal gun and goes on a rampage. These BANS and CONTROLS are unrelated.

So how do we stop this virus known as anti-gun politicians ?

There will always be someone wanting to push a bill like that after an incident like this. Just realize there's an enormous gap between introducing a bill and passing a bill. There's always going to be anti gun members of congress, this country is too socially and geographically diverse for it to be otherwise in a body of 535. Vote and write your congressman and senator to let them know where you stand.

Meds I believe are a large part of the problem, and its the person not the gun. This kid was posting you tubes talking about what he was going to do. I think the victims family my have a cause of action against them the family, possibly his doctor and the pharmaceutical company. It would be a long uphill battle but needs to be started somewhere. With all the similar events like this, such a warning should be taken SERIOUSLY. Funny how if someone says to his shrink that he feels suicidal they will snatch you up for observation, but if the threat is against others nothing?

I also find it odd that most of these anti depressant, as well as many other psych meds carry warnings like "may cause thoughts of suicide" and so forth but no one says, may cause thoughts of getting even before you do so....

vamo, I love that signature! Says a lot about the thoughts in this thread.

I heard on the news this morning that his family was concerned over his social media posts and did call law enforcement to check him out. He also was seeing a psych, but I guess California law requires a threat against a specific person before action can be taken. (This all from CNN, who is already talking gun control, so consider the source)

If we made Socialism illegal and unprofitable and simply followed the U. S. Constitution to the letter and do away with The Supremes (political appointees) telling us what the Bill of Rights really "means" we wouldn't have these problems. People also need to stop assuming that our Senators and Representatives actually care what "we the people" think about their actions. They're only in it for the money. They'll tell you whatever they think you want to hear. And then do whatever they need to to get more money. When I worked for the NRA I saw how almost every one of them keeps two different response letters for their constituents. Many times the wrong letter gets mailed back to you. While I am certain that there actually are honest politicians who remain loyal to the Oath of Office I have only personally been able to find a very small handful and in a "Democracy" they cannot win. Therein lies the basic problem with "Democracy" (which the Founding Fathers rejected strongly when the Constitution was written.) The United States is not and was never intended to be a "Democracy". It is a Constitutional Republic. Try selling that concept to our current Government. Read The Federalist Papers.

I say compromise.

Take all of our guns.

In return, law enforcement (local state and federal) cannot have weapons and politicians will not have armed guards. Military can train with airsoft on U.S. lands and get the real things overseas or across the border

in reality the goal is to take guns away from the people, being that these trusted law enforcement and military folks are people too and fallible. Hence, they too are susceptible to mental illness. We can't have any RISKS of living in a FREE SOCIETY.

Maybe going full "progressive" on them will make them think twice.

Furthermore, these politcians are tacky. If you want to use the media to offer condolences to the victims and their families, that's fine by me, but to use the proverbial "bodies of the deceased as a soapbox" and push an agenda is truly bad form.

Pro v.s. anti will go on till the end of time. Even if they take all guns away, then it's a knife problem, then a bat problem, then a hammer problem. Energy never ends, it just changes form. Same thing with racism, tattoo everybody green, then it will be the blue eyes against brown, never ends, it just changes form.

Reading some of the more than 2500 comments on the article, they run to more than 95% pro gun. People are getting quite tired of liberal politicians spouting off about new controls that just hamper, and even endanger, law abiding citizens.

As one commenter posted, a dozen or more law were broken in this lunatic's rampage. Adding 2 or 3 more would have made no difference whatsoever.

Thanks, I think it emphasizes our greatest threat as gun owners. And is more appropriate than usual for this thread. Its not the statist that wants power that is our greatest threat. Its the person who thinks they're doing society a favor by fighting the good fight against civilian gun ownership.

Careful reading too much into internet comments. Its usually the angriest most opinionated people that comment on news articles. And if you first saw it linked from a pro gun source chances are that's where most of those commentators are coming from and not representative of the general population.

Vamo is referring to being linked off of pro-gun sites like this one, not Reuters. He is indicating that the people who post on such articles, especially when the article is linked on sites full of like minded people, are not representative of population as a whole.

cannot stop it, but must fight it

I also take steps in my own life to support pro-gun states. I will NOT travel to or through any state that will not honor my New Mexico concealed handgun license.
Being unarmed is simply not an option for me. I am actually considering attending a NM law enforcement academy and joining a P.D. so that I can ultimately carry as a retired LEO under the federal law.

Jorg, the vast majority of those posters are getting the article off of Yahoo! and Reuters, not pro gun sites like THR and TFL.

Trust me! :D We may have to agree to disagree.

the same way you stop illiteracy, teen pregnancy, and drug abuse.

What concerns me most

Is when these articles are not flash in the pan but referencing CBS's "Face the Nation where he made these comments.

I for one think it can be stopped, but it takes a concerted effort. What if every member of this board, every NRA member, flooded this guys email...Said they were going to send $10 each to his opponent in the next election.

Guarantee his tune would change...its a matter of strength in numbers. a Few haphazard emails (like mine to various "deaf" politicians) doesn't get their attention. Thousands promising support for their opposition (aka CASH) has them sitting up like prairie dogs playing whack a mole.

You can't stop it in a democracy with the constitutional rights that we have. If there was a tool to do that then we would be living with some other form of gov't. I don't mind the anti-gun crowd, if they want to vote their 2A rights away, or any of their rights for that matter, I say good luck. People have done that many times throughout history and it always turns out to work against them. Giving up your freedom never has been a good thing and never will be.

Hopefully this wakes up some of our "reasonable gun control" members that you can't make deals with the devil. California already has semi-auto bans, magazine bans, may-issue carry, registration, waiting periods, no private sales, mandatory training, etc. Despite all of these restrictions, they immediately demanded MORE restrictions when these failed to prevent mass murder - and of course, they blamed the NRA - even though the California legislature hasn't listened to what the NRA thinks for decades.

This is what you get. No matter what restrictions you accept, they'll immediately turn around and ask for more. Accepting restrictions only gets you more restrictions.

Education.

You cannot change the minds of the politicians at the top through traditional lobbying methods ie calls, emails, money to organizations (NRA) they hate. Get through to the people on the fence and in the middle. Anti-gun politicians are in their positions because of ignorance on part of the populace.

They don't care about your rights. All they care about is your taxes.
