The RUGER OLD ARMY Club

Oops, I just won a 5 1/2" fixed sight Blue ROA on GunBroker. It'll be a fine addition to the rest. I'm still not in this club because Photobucket won't work on my new computer. I may have paid too much, but I wanted it.:)
 
Anyone know of a source for ROA parts. Need a trigger. Bought a ROA on this forum that has a "hair" trigger. After some use and a couple of "surprise" firing, on the line and down range thank god, I am putting it away until I can find a new trigger. I think it is the trigger, the back end of this one that engages the 1/2 and full notch on the hammer is very thin. Comparing it to one for sale on ebay. (the one on ebay appears to be just a casting) or at least would need a lot of hand work.
Input anyone.....................
 
If you can't buy one, make one. Xerox the object, cut out the copy and glue it onto a piece of suitable steel, hacksaw and file away.

Went to an auction....

...several weeks ago, and brought home:

They were without grips when purchased; the auction house said they were contracted to do an estate sale for a fellow who did woodworking, and amongst his effects were boxes of wood pistol grips. It wasn't until after the estate sale when they were cataloging his gun collection for an all-guns auction that they found out the boxes of grips they'd already sold belonged to his guns! So, I set out to give the poor boys some new pants.
Grip materials, top to bottom:
American Holly, custom made by Bill Murrell of Republic, MO
'Bonded' Ivory, mass produced by gungrips.com

The holly grips will gradually turn dark yellow, like these 5 year old holly grips on my single six, compared with the new holly on the ROA:

Modified ROA

You may have noticed the unusual hammer profile on the fourth ROA in the post above:

It also has a lightened trigger spring and has been well taken care of. It was built in 1978.
 
I am plain oled sick and tired of seeing Holly used for gun grips, at least on guns not my own.Believe I would prefer that to Ivory in any case.
Some body send a poor boy some Holly wood, or give a good source?
Mykeal, what is the spring for in the hammer?

Holly is like gold. I know where you can have some grips made; I don't know if you can buy the wood itself.

I have no idea what the spring does. Haven't had it apart yet. When I find out, I'll post it here.
 
Its the spring for the plunger that actuates the bolt. Rugers dont have cams that wear out, nor do they have two armed bolts that break! It's one of the reasons they are "bullet proof"!!! (Cant believe I said that !!)

Hollies are more or less 'trash' trees around here. They grow in damp places and aren't good for much (I don't like yellow grips).

I cut down a large holly a while ago that was in my yard because I was tired of getting stuck by the leaves.
There ought to be some along the river bank or a swamp edge near you.

HEADS UP: Taurus Bob has a SS Ruger Old Army conversion cylinder for sale in 'Accessories' for $205 in the Trading Post. That's a pretty good deal for anyone wanting one.

Been looking for one of those myself (5 1/2" blued fixed sights) to sort of finish my little collection. Got the SS fixed sight 5 1/2" and 3 adjustable sighted 7 1/2" revolvers (2 SS and 1 blued)... Good find! rclark 182.

I would grab that $751 5 1/2 fixed sight blue ROA while you still can. They don't come on for sale often. If ever, nowadays. And it's NIB. You wont find many used ones from ROA lovers. Once tried, they become keepers. Great balance and superb handling is the key word here. Velocity loss is very, very low. ............. it most likely is from a non ROA lover or web flipper. Have seen it go as high as $950 NIB in my part of town. Geez ! And gone the next day. A true Old Army shooter would never sell his. Nope. Good luck on your quest !
