Removing Stock Stains

Believe it or not, I've used Easy Off oven cleaner on military surplus stocks and it may take more than one application but it continues to lift out the oil left behind by dirty hands over many years of shooting such firearms. From your pictures some of your problem is oily hands. The scratches may be something else. My worst (and the oldest) one was a Czech Mauser. Excellent results with my M1 Carbines and Garand. I've left it on even overnight (I think even an hour would be long enough) and wash it off with warm water and a scotch brite pad of course being careful of checkering and/or cartouches and let it dry. It worked on walnut but I don't know about birch.

I may keep it the way it is. Looks rather old. Though I'm putting a butt pad or somthing in it because belive it or not it was more brutal than my 12gauge mossberg, 2 3/4 federal high brass #6 shot through it was painful! I've shot over 2 boxes almost 3 of 12 gauge 3inch mag slugs through my mossberg and it didnt hurt near as bad as the 2 shots of the 16

I think the maker was running short on stocks & used one that was cut to close to the bark side. When it runs the length of the stock & checkering that tells you something.
Next time before anything else is done to the stock after stripping, put a coat of straight pure pine tar on it. It will bring back to life old wood like nothing else.
