I was in a gun store that is in Chapter 11 thanks to the Commerce Administration's forcing banks not to do business with gun dealers.

I just heard that you know who banned AKs. I've always wanted an AK but was hesitant because of other priorities. They have a Century Zestavia AK, stamped and made in Serbia. They are selling it for 695.00 plus tax.

Two questions.

1. Is now the time to buy? Will my hopes of getting an AK in the future be put on hold for a long time and at a higher price?
2. Is that a good price?

Let me know your thoughts. I am on my way to an atm.

Thanks as always,

MC.

Either wait and hope the sanctions are lifted, or get it now before the price goes up which it will very soon.

AK's are not affected in this new sanction against Russia, Saiga AK's, Mosins (I think). Even Tula ammo should be all set.

If it's the Century AK with the dual charging handle that's a reasonable price.

I would not rush out and buy one, just because "it's available now." There are other AK series rifles that can still be imported. Given enough demand, a U.S. manufacturer will build an AK from a U.S. receiver and 100% U.S. components. My advice...wait it out.

You can buy 100% US made AKs from Century, and not have to worry about silly 922r compliance if you want to change out a part. Their C39 model, milled receivers, and cheaper than $695 last time I looked a few months ago.

All kinds of AKs that are not affected at all. No need to over pay for an AK.

The gun store is in Chapter 11 thanks to bad business decisions by the owner. While it's convenient to blame someone else you'll note that plenty of other gun shops aren't in bankruptcy.

No one has banned AK's.:scrutiny:

To clarify, the executive order has banned the future import of almost all newly made Russian arms and ammo. It's a economic sanction against the Russian arms industry for Russia's actions in Ukraine.

There are no sanctions against Serbia, so the Zastava you looked at is not in eminent danger of being banned from import. I wouldn't pay $700 for it.

Like Ugar said, it's not in imminent danger of a ban, so no need to panic buy and overpay for it. However, there are clouds forming on the horizon for AKs, so buying one now isn't a terrible idea.

If it's a Zastava N-PAP, Bud's has one for $525. With free shipping and a ~$25 transfer fee, you are coming out well ahead compared to that guy's asking price. I'd use the money you saved to stock up on some cheap steel ammo to feed it - that stuff might not be around forever.

Since nobody has actually given any information about the gun in question, I will elect myself to do so.

The N-PAP and O-PAP guns that Century is importing are not Century-made guns. The first generation of Zastava-made AK's were unreliable for various reasons, but the current generation of imports are fantastic.

I know one person who has an O-PAP, and he loves it dearly. Anecdotal evidence at best, though.

Ignoring the fact that Century QC seems to have improved at least a small bit recently, you have nothing to worry about in terms of Century assembling the gun, only with bringing it into compliance via opening the magwell and adding some US made parts. Both the N-PAP and O-PAP are a bit heavier than the average AKM, though the O-PAP has a RPK reciever which is made of thicker sheet steel than the normal AKM, and as such is heavier. The comb angle is also a bit odd, and some report having more "cheek slap" with it than other designs. Their barrels are also not chrome-lined, IIRC, so watch out if you're shooting huge volumes or shooting corrosive, but otherwise shouldn't be a huge issue.

The price is on the high-side, though. You can find N-PAPs from various sellers around the $550 mark, which can go to about $650 after shipping and transfers, which is still money saved over buying it from the shop right now.

As other members have said, you don't have to worry about ALL AK's being banned from import as of right now, just those of Russian make. If you're not wanting to get an AK right here right now, don't force yourself into buying the gun, especially if you're going to be messing up other more important plans. If, however, you like the gun and would want to get it regardless of any import bans, then the Zastava is a quality choice.

Post like this kinda make me wonder if we're going to get a 2013 style self inflicted panic on commie guns and calibers.

Nothing is banned proceed as you normally would if you see supplies tighten its because we the consumers are panicking, not because anything has been "banned".

For the sake of being able to still fire 7.62x39 on a regular basis, I certainly hope not. However, it looks as if it is going to be that way.

Saying this is about as accurate as people claiming that all AK's are banned. I can't stand misinformation on either side.

Yes, US firms have been banned from importing Izhmash firearms, which includes a good deal of AKM variants, and also effects the importation of VEPR variants. If you see supplies tighten, it's due to a reduction in supply via importers, and an increase in demand.

meatcreeper check out Centerfire Systems they're not Century but the AK's there are as low as $469 and free shipping they have several might check them out. I used to do a lot of business with them good people.

@dogtown tom, you probably know more than me about that store. Here is some info on it from a local news channel: http://www.khou.com/news/local/Katy-gun-store-facing-foreclosure-struggles-to-stay-open-264517091.html

I also received some emails related to the above too. I probably should have left the "Chapter 11" part out of my post. I apologize, because the post was written on my phone with what I believed was a high sense of urgency at the time. I appreciate all the comments and suggestions.
  • My fears were calmed
  • I've learned a little more than I knew about AK rifles
  • I've learned what a good price point for an AK is
  • I've gotten some good leads for my first AK.
As usual you folks came through. I appreciate it very much!

tactical Firearms is indeed in trouble business wise, but it isn't the government's doing, its their own mismanagement of the business.

I would not buy as there are now American made as well as very nice used model's available for much less. I don't believe you should feel any immediate fear or should ever fear as far as that goes since it will cloud your judgment. I can find comparable equipment today for $500.00 down.

So does this mean that availability and price of Russian ammo like Tul, Brown Bear and Wolf is going to be effected?

Probably not because most of that is sources from countries outside of Russia. Don't fuel the panic, we'll be fine.

Don't fuel the panic, we'll be fine.
Amen. I think the store fueled the panic, based on their own gain. Shame on them. I literally heard the words, "Obama banned AKs" come out of the mouth of one of the sales people. I asked him what that was about, then he hold me about the sanctions imposed via executive order the day before.

Thanks to members of THR, I got good, sound advice and other comments. As far as I am concerned, there is no panic (at least not for me). I want an AK and because of the advice of THR members, I should have the funds to get one.

That being said, I welcome additional comments on selecting my first AK. Moderator, if I need to close this post and start a new one so that it stays true to the category it was posted in, please let me know.

You folks are the greatest.
