I like the Warne rings.

As far as scopes, most of mine wear Nikon Buckmasters. Great scopes for the money.

Which model 550? If it's an American or Varmint, the CZ Mediums are fine as are several other brands. If it's a hog-back stock like the FS or Lux and you want a decent cheek weld you will want to use the lowest rings you can find and a scope that clears at the objective (barrel or rear sight) and ocular (bolt). Warne makes some that are listed at .425" and therefore seem to be slightly lower than the .500" CZ mediums (assuming the measurements are apples-to-apples, which isn't always the case). http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/15...0-brno-602-19mm-dovetail?cm_vc=ProductFinding

I'm still searching to see if I can find any that are lower than the Warnes. The Alaska Arms ones mentioned above look interesting and indicate a "low" set, but there's no info on the height. I'm going to try to reach them to get more info. They are expensive (!) but the quick-detach would allow me to use the iron sights when I want, and to easily move a single scope between my two 550 FS guns.

It's a 550 with the full length European stock with adjustable sights. I have a Redfield revolution 3x9 that I want to mount as a surprise for him.

351,
Second from the top is that same gun with a Sightron SII 3-9x42 in CZ Medium rings. As you can see, there's plenty of room for lower mounting if you can find lower rings. As mentioned, the Warnes are supposedly a little bit lower.

The 527 (3rd down from the top) has the Redfield Revolution that you are planning to use, and you can see that the objective bell is a bit smaller than the Sightron on the 550. Both the Sightron and the Redfield have nice, compact ocular bells, so interference with a raised bolt won't be an issue unless you happen across some super low set of rings that I've never seen offered for the 550.

Please let me know if you find anything lower than the Warnes!

You can probably go lower than medium rings, but it would also probably include a bolt modification.

Is there such a thing as lower-than-medium rings for the 550?

The Warnes are the lowest I recall seeing, and they're listed at .425". The CZ Mediums are listed at .500", but they may or may not be directly comparable in specs.

351,
Here's the Redfield Revolution 3-9x40 on a 550 FS, mounted in CZ Medium rings. There's .210" clearance between the bolt and the ocular with the bolt "flexed" upwards, and .250" without flexing the bolt upwards.
Given that, the Warnes would, in theory, reduce the bolt-to-ocular clearance by about a third.
