I am a criminal defense attorney and am re-investigating a homicide that occurred in 1992. The police observed a 12 gauge shotgun at the scene, together with a number of loaded magazines. The shotgun was not confiscated, nor was any identifying information recorded.

Question: what types of magazine-fed 12 gauge shotguns were available in the US in 1992? Thanks for any information you might provide.

Rem 870's could have an aftermarket box mag conversion. I believe other pumps and semi's(Rem 1100's , Mossberg 500's etc) could too. Used M14 mags. Anyway, a standard tube is a magazine. There are/were such things a shotgun tube speed loaders.
Any mention of the mags being shotgun mags? Those mags could have been for anything. The days of cops knowing anything about firearms they weren't issued are long gone.

The police report described "loaded shotgun magazines" being found.

That was the end of the description, however.

Thanks for the input.

I just checked the 1992, and 1982 Gun Digests and neither one show any box fed shotguns.

Except for some Savage, Mossberg, and other brand bolt-actions.
They were quite common after WWII up until price competitive pump shotguns pushed them out.

But, I don't think I ever knew anyone who had a bunch of extra magazines for a bolt-action shotgun!

Marlin and Mossberg had a number of bolt-action magazine-fed shotguns, but are you even sure they were talking about actual magazines? The police aren't exactly known for their firearms knowledge, and they could have been talking about speedloaders, or even loose extension tubes. Are there any scene photographs, and do you know who exactly took those notes?

I purchased my USAS-12 in May of '91 if I recall.

And there was that odd SPAS beast that I've only seen at gun shows...

I'm not sure if they were around that early, but at some time someone was offering magazine conversions for 870's and 500's. I'm fairly sure it wasn't out until the mid-90's, though.

For that matter, considering how poorly unfamiliar things are often described, the 'magazines' could just be simple speedloader tubes.
