Hello,

I have the option of buying two different rifles:

Option 1: ($500)
A Remington 700 ADL in 308
Comes with a Bushnell 3200 Elite (firefly reticle)
Has a cheap sling, and a bipod.
200ish rounds through it

Option 2: ($450)
Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 223
Comes with the standard remington
120ish rounds through it

Which would you recommend I buy? This would be my first long-range rifle. I want it primarily for shooting at the range, maybe some hunting in the future, and general SHTF use if needed. Thanks!

My current range is just 100 yards, there is another one nearby with 400 yards. I'll be moving to one that has more yards next year. Probably 400~600ish. I'd really like to get into long range shooting. I sort of want a rifle that is a jack of all trades, I already have an ar-15.

Also, do you think the 308 rifle is a good price for what I am getting?

Then .308.

You already have a .223.

And the .223 isn't a 'long range' rifle in the first place.

I would definitely opt for the .308. Besides the fact that you already have a .223, I think you'll have better luck at long range with the .308.

308 has an ok scope and is a good all around cartridge in a proven platform...it's a no brainer. Go .308.

The other option is buy a different upper in a better round than .223. Uppers can be as cheap or as expensive as you want them and can shoot as close or as far as you want. There are lots of option far better than .223 in a stock AR for long range, on both ends of the spectrum. .20 tactical, and 204 ruger on the small side and 458 socom and 50 beowulf. The sweet spot for range seems to be between 6mm and 7mm, there are plenty options.

Price is fair but slightly high here, but prices vary wildly and senselessly across the nation. Hit gunbroker and find a comparable gun. If you are looking at the scope as a value look up new price and cut it to 1/3 of that price as used glass is not really a demanded item.

Do you have any suggestions for inspecting the remington 700 when I buy it? I assume the ADL does not come with a varmint barrel?

Most likely, if it is a varmint variant, it will be called so, such as M700V, or SPS Varmint. Regardless, the barrel will be obviously larger (heavier) than the standard barrel. Too, a varmint model almost certainly will not have iron sights, unless someone installed target/match sights. The rear sight on that case would be on the receiver, not the barrel. And I agree with the others, the .308 is the better choice.

The difference between the BDL and the ADL is that the ADL has a "blind" magazine, no floor plate. I did a quick search to see if I could locate an ADL model in varmint configuration. Remington does/did make one. Note the 26" barrel. Link follows: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2013/01/joe-grine/gun-review-remington-700-adl-varmint/

.308. That's a good deer hunting scope, but the crosshairs are thick. You'll probably want to put something else on eventually. If you consider the value of the scope as part of what makes up the price, it makes the rifle cheaper too.

rem 700

I bought a Remington 700 ADL 308 with the Varmint Wt barrel for 403.00 after the rebates at Dick's sporting goods last year(rifle was 450 minus 47 for applying for and using a Dick's CC which I never carry a balance on only use it to get discounts). Upgraded it to SPS with a new stock off Ebay for 52.00 shipped and a BDL TG for 60.00. It came with a china 4-12 scope that I didn't even mount on the rifle. My favorite scope is the Bushnell tactical elite 10X. This rifle shoots ragged hole 100 yd groups. The combo for 500 isn't to bad but I personally would go with a new rifle. I would offer 400-450 and see if you can get it. price the 3200 on Ebay Good luck with your purchase

here is my 300 yd group with the rifle

check first but Remington 700's has a trigger recall on the pro.......DESCRIPTION OF THE HAZARD: Remington has determined that some Model 700 and Model Seven rifles with XMP triggers could, under certain circumstances, unintentionally discharge. A Remington investigation has determined that some XMP triggers might have excess bonding agent used in the assembly process. While Remington has the utmost confidence in the design of the XMP trigger, it is undertaking this recall in the interest of consumer safety to remove any potential excess bonding agent applied in the assembly process

For a range gun, or varmit hunting I would go with the .223 SPS, unless you plan on hunting deer size game beyond a couple hundred yards. Or bigger game at any range.

For "your" purpose, .308 for sure!

Remington bolt guns have been some of the most accurate reliable rifles I've owned and I bought my first one in 1971, I still have it!
