Finally got my special order 22-inch barreled 10/22 in yesterday, and as soon as I got it out of the box I went about getting the front sight removed to install the Tech-Sights I've had waiting for it. Now I've done this before to 10/22s, I've installed Tech-Sights before and removed the front sight post on a 10/22 that was built ~10 years ago (and it went fairly smoothly, tapped it out in about 10 minutes) . But this one just would not cooperate.

After wailing on it with a 3lb engineer's hammer and both a brass and steel punch for over an hour, I ended up having to cut through it with a dremel and remove the original sight in two pieces. There was an obvious gouge where the bottom part of the sight was digging into the dovetail every time I tapped it with the hammer, and would never have come out with the hammer and punch alone.

Just wanted to give a heads-up to those with newer 10/22s who are trying to remove the stock front sight post. The rifle might not give it up without a fight.

The Tech-Sight front post slid in place very easily, no tapping required. I applied a dab of blue threadlocker to the set screw and buttonhead screws before tightening. The new post is very secure. Same with the rear sight.

I've had the same issue with a pair of new 10/22's within the last 2 years. The front sights seem to be soldered or otherwise permanently attached in the dovetail.

I also just noticed that apparently Ruger changed their manufacturing technique with the front sight area of the barrel. My older 10/22 appeared to have barrel forged from a single billet, including the thicker part where the sight attaches:

But on the new one, that band has steel with the grain perpendicular to that of the rest of the barrel:

So that part must be added on now (?)

(yes that little nick in the steel is my fault!)

I had to whack mine so hard that even though I had it properly supported, I canted the barrel. Fortunately, on a 10/22 that is easy to fix.

I wish I had this problem. Mine came off during a shooting session, and won't stay on now..

Tech-Sights are your solution, look at GG's picture above.
You insert the Tech-Sight front sight into the dovetail, and then expand it as needed to lock it in. Custom fit to your dovetail.
AND it provides a much higher quality aperture rear sight.

Love my Tech Sights. I'd put them on everything but they come for a limited number of guns. I'd love a Tech Sight set up on my Ruger 77/357. That would be just about perfect but no such luck.
