My father's friend moved to Ireland and would like his 17hmr bolt action rifle to be there with him. I haven't found any info regarding that process. Does anyone know where to begin?

Thanks!

You would need to contact both US and Irish authorities for the legal aspects regarding ITAR, taxes, licenses, etc.
You just can't mail it to him ;)

Good Luck

It is probably possible, but the costs involved may mean that it's not worthwhile. Unless the rifle has some sentimental value, it may just be a better bet to buy one in Ireland.

I had a gun shipped from the UK a few years ago. I used a dealer in NY that handled everything. There are dealers in Ireland that you can contact. Give one a call and they should be able to answer all your questions. I do know that because of their restrictions it might be difficult and expensive.

Possible? Legally. Probably not, but maybe... I've never looked into it specifically, but ...

I think the first analysis is how much money you want to burn and how long you're willing to wait.

The UK is extremely strict on gun control, and the Irish do not have a right to own guns. Special licenses are available.

You're looking at a LOT of red tape, lawyers, customs here and there, special licensing, and even shipping and other costs/fees.

You could easily drop thousands of dollars on this just to get a "no." And an uneducated shot in the dark is that the answer is probably no, before spending a lot of time and money looking into it.

Still interested? If you're really motivated, check these pages for starters...

This website has basic information and links for getting a license and importing a firearm. Person needs to be there for 6 months among other things before applying.

Good luck.

Edited to add: Saw that there are no rights to own guns, things like OC spray are totally prohibited, and gun/ammo storage requirements exist. Sure makes you appreciate being an American and living in the USA.

International shipping............. Google your question.

Have your friend, check out the requirements he`s the one who wants it shipped. J s/n.

Is it possible? Yes. You would need to ship via a specially licensed export dealer in the US who would ship it to a specially licensed Irish dealer who can import into Ireland.

Is it practical? No. Once you add up the costs of shipping to the exporter, the exporter's fees, the transatlantic shipping costs, the importer's fees, shipping to the owner in Ireland, customs, etc., it will be much cheaper to buy a new rifle in Ireland, the higher retail prices there notwithstanding.

Alex says ,here is the answer. Happy New Year! :D

Any time international shipping is involved, it is better to start with the importing country. Check their laws to see if (1) it is possible to legally own or import that type of firearm, (2) if there is a dealer or importer who will handle the paperwork and shipping, (3) if not, what is required for an individual to import that firearm, (4) what the costs will be, and (5) if a similar type of firearm is legally available in the country, making importation unnecessary.

If all goes well in the importing country, then the contact in the exporting country can begin the export process, which is usually a bit easier. Again, an experienced exporter can help.

Availability of ammunition should also be determined. Even in countries with relatively lenient gun laws, some kinds or calibers of ammo may be illegal or unavailable. Handloading may be illegal or heavily restricted. While .22 LR is usually available if guns are available at all, other rimfire rounds may be restricted or simply not popular enough to be worth manufacturing or importing (.17 HMR is not even available in many gun shops in the U.S.)

Ten replies, covering both Irelands. I suppose your Dad's friend knows which Ireland he is in!

Give us a clue - Republic Of, or Ulster Ireland?

Ray

Ray, good question! I'm sure the friend knows, but I sure don't. I'm going to advise the friend to work out the details from his end first. Thank you all for your input.
