I picked up my first Rock Island Armory pistol yesterday, the Ultra FS HC (best I can tell, that stands for "full size, high capacity") in 10mm, model #52009.

It's a new gun and I want to post a quick review here in case you guys are interested. It's a standard size 1911, but a double-stack, and holds 16 rounds in the magazine. Unfortunately it only comes with one; I think we can all agree that every semi-auto should come with two as the very minimum.

It was packed in oil when I got it, in a very handy plastic case with the usual manual and two fired shells (which of course I will reload) and I walked out the door for $730 including shipping.

Red fiber-opitc front sight is nice, just enough air around it to be precise. Rear sight is adjustable for elevation and windage, seems to shoot point of aim with proper ammo. Finish is parkerized and it's not the most durable in the world but it works. I'll probably Cerecoat it eventually. Fit and finish are actually pretty good, no machine marks that I can see and the slide only wiggles the slightest amount when you check the slide/frame fit.

Comes with a 5 inch BULL BARREL. Currently on their website they have a picture of this pistol chambered in .45 with the barrel bushing as the stock picture for the 52009, there's not really a spec sheet so this is misleading. The barrel is plenty accurate but I was planning on putting a bushing-type compensater on it, so now I think I'll buy a new barrel. Anyone want to buy the old one? ;)

Apparently RIA doesn't even make a standard 10mm barrel; only bull barrels. This from the friendly chat service guy on their website, which, unlike the lack of spec sheets, is very useful.

The grip is incredibly ergonomic. Seriously! I imagined holding a 2x4, but this has got to be my favorite pistol grip ever. My brother also loves it. Easy to reach the trigger, wide body spreads the recoil impulse, just the right amount of room for my support hand, great beavertail with memory notch, the works. I have large hands and do a fair amount of manual labor so I'm sure other folks will have different fits.

I don't like the safety. It is extended...but a little too much, and it is much easier to put on than to take off. I know that's the way it should be, but this is to the point that it is difficult to disengage. It has gotten a bit better with use. It does have some pretty sharp edges and I've decided I'm going to take it off (that's probably harder to do than I think it is...) and sand/file it down.

The mag release is so-so... a bit gritty but it's extended a bit and easy enough to reach. The grips are perfect, and the mainspring housing is stippled with a few small cuts made on the front strap to help you grip. I don't think it could be improved really.

The mag funnel is great.

I ran about a hundred rounds through it today, a box of Hawk (a local brand... not impressed) and about 50 hand loads with my cast bullets. It ate everything fine, had one hand-load nose-dive on me because it was too long. The Hawk ammo was so underpowered it was like shooting 9mm. I can't believe the RIA was reliable with it. My hand-loads are pretty powerful, but the recoil was very easy to manage. I'd compare it to shooting .45 out of my G21.

Anyway I'm quite smitten with the gun and want to put a compensator on it and get some more mags.... also thinking about a light rail from surefire. Would love any advice you guys have! They have more mags on the website and also the Para mags, think I'll just get more of the same. Bit pricey at $40 but oh well.

I'm always on the fence about what 10mm to buy...eventually. Reviews like this help a lot. Thanks.

As for RIA, I have a GI model and I'm quite happy with it. Other than the strange smooth grips it came with (which were replaced with checkered walnut grips in short order), I haven't any complaints. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending an RIA to anyone wanting a 1911 that won't require a 2nd mortgage.

I have been thinking hard about the 40 caliber version for sale at my LGS. Thanks for the review! :)

Nice review. I probably wouldn't find the grip too comfortable as I have fairly small hands and any high capacity 1911 is going to be a bit too wide for my hands. Now a single stack 10mm. would be just fine.

This is the next pistol I am seriously considering buying, this exact one you have with the hc magazine in 10mm. Thanks for the review. I have medium sized hands so I worry about how it will fit my hands with the hc magazine and grip.

Nice review. I'd like a 10mm 1911, and I'm a RIA fan anyway. But the climbing prices of RIA's is keeping me away. I paid $279 for my first one, $400 for #4, it's hard for me to get past those low prices and throw out larger wads of cash.

Not saying they're not worth it, I'm just a COB. Don't really need a 10mm anyway, plus I'd have to get dies, start gathering brass, etc.....

I think the grip may fit your hand better than you think. My sister-in-law shot the gun and didn't find it too difficult.

Agreed on the price increase; however I do think they are putting out a higher-quality gun than they used too.... might just be my perception.

I understand they make the same pistol in .45, .40, and 9mm, I think they have everything in common except the barrel and recoil spring; possibly a few internals.

the climbing prices of RIA's is keeping me away.

The price of the RIA, whilst comparing their quality to most mid priced USA 1911 type guns, has always made me love the RIA, but if the price becomes close to what US manufactured guns with the same features I'll stop praising RIA. The RIA I have has a cast 4140 frame, if they want to charge what our guys charge they need to start forging their frames, and if they want to venture into the $1K market they will also need to make their small parts from barstock. I love the Dan Wesson for exactly the same reason I like the RIA, that is, the price relative to the quality of workmanship and materials. I'm not comparing the two directly, but the bargain price point offered is similar.

Very interesting review.

Been carrying these two for close to 15 years. So far, so good.

No cracked frames, no sprained wrists. Shot a coyote with the Gummint model at 80 yards.

10mm works for me.

What's a gun review without pics?

Yeah, I was also interested in seeing pics of this 10mm double-stack 1911. Thanks.

We've got a single stack longslide in for an article. I'm trying to get it when we are done.

rock island armory 52009

Just bought one from Buds today. I have been looking for a Hi-Cap 10MM other than my Glock 20SF for a while and I have been looking for this specific model for about a month. Guess the shipment just came in because Grabagun also has them listed. I am curious to see what a $600 Hi capacity Rock Island 10MM looks like and more so, how it shoots. For the money I don't expect a DW or even a Para but you can barely get a Gen4 Glock for this kind of money. Any idea for extra mags? I believe the factory 16RD mags are Metal Form so I am hoping for a Mecgar- something of better quality, because the problems with RIA seem to be mostly magazine related. I will write again after I shoot it.
