Only 10 guns...

Can't imagine what couldn't be done with proper application of those guns....

Pocket concealed carry, .22lr handgun plinking, ....

I don't think it is as innately interesting for posters as these inventory/wish list threads obviously are, but I kinda wish a "10 uses" thread along the same lines would take off. As in, I'd love to see what people consider their most important uses of guns, instead of the guns they have/want.

But I'll play:
1) Browning Buckmark W/ threaded barrel. Plinking, small game hunting, introducing new shooters.
2) KT P3AT. concealed carry
3) RIA .22TCM/9mm convertible single stack. Concealed carry, plinking, small game hunting, home defense.
4) Ruger Alaskan .454 casull. Concealed carry, hiking, hunting, defense.
5) Brazilian m92 clone, 16" barrel stainless .454 casull. Plinking, hunting, defense.
6) KSG 12ga. Duck hunting? Dunno but people seem to like 12ga shotguns so I gotta have one.
7) Beretta AL391 or equivalent 20ga semi-auto. Hunting, clays, defense.
8) Bolt action .308 W/ threaded barrel. Hunting, target practice, etc.
9) bolt action .22lr W/ threaded barrel. Hunting, plinking, target practice, new shooters, small game, etc.
10) Captured P-08 or equivalent, for being able to place a piece of history in someone's hands.

I could live with that. Three rifles, two shotguns, five handguns. I can still plink and practice, I can learn to hunt, I can break clays, I can defend myself from .6 to 600 yards. I can share my enjoyment of guns with new shooters.

Still leaves huge gaps though.

I could do with a lot less than 10, but I'll play.

Handguns:
CZ 75B 9mm (have it, one of my "minimum" guns, and my "one only" gun)
Glock 30, Gen 3 (have it, would be nice to keep if the situation allows)
S&W 27-2 .357 Magnum (have it)
M1911 (have it)

Rifles:
M1917 .30-06 (have it, my other "minimum" gun)
M1 Garand (have it, would be nice to keep if the situation allows)
AR-15 (have it)
CZ 550 .375 H&H
Mauser 98k (have an M48BO)

Shotguns:
Remington 870 Police Magnum 12 gauge

Ruger Mini-14
Ruger SR40-C
Ruger SR9-C
Remington 700 sps tactical .308
Mossberg 500 pump action
Ruger 10/22
AR-10 in .308
Colt 1911 in .22 caliber
Ruger SP-101 in .357

I only need 9, lol.:neener:
I just noticed that with the exception of the pump shotgun, you could fill all yours with Ruger products. That's kind of cool.

I'll tweak it a bit.. What would be your top 10 if:
1. The SHTF, & it is the zombie apocalypse.
2. You cannot get parts.
3. You have to carry what you have, but food & water are abundant (yeah i know, makes no sense, but this is like a movie!).
4. Ammo seems to replace itself, too.. lots of stored caches of bullets everywhere!
IOW, you are in a modern apocalypse movie, where you don't really have to eat or drink or sleep, just shoot zombies, and maybe a few targets for fun.

Here would be my list, in this case:
1. semi auto 12ga w/mags, ala saiga or vepr.
2. m1a scout 308.
3. para 14.45 45acp 1911.
4. Glock 30s.
5. AR
6. redhawk 45acp/45c
7. 454 lever carbine

Most of the time, i'd have the AR in place, as it would give me the fastest shots & recovery with the most capacity. But if i needed some longer range, the carbines would fill that niche. No need for a nice engraved O/U.. no need for 22s or 9mms.

Actually, if i had to carry these around, i'd probably go with just 2, the ar & the para 14.45 (or maybe the glock 30s since it is lighter).. but there would be times i'd miss the shotgun.. i would hate to be without its power & easy accuracy. If there was plenty of ammo stashed all around, the shotgun would be nice for close range defensive work.. as long as the zombies weren't shooting back!

I guess there are a lot of 'what if' scenarios that could come up, & the firearm choice in those situations would be different, depending on the circumstances. If it were a hitchcockesque movie of 'The Birds', but with clay pigeons attacking everyone, a longer barreled, hi cap pump or auto might be nice. I might even prefer the O/U for accuracy, but reloads would be tough. If the zombie hordes were squirrels, a 10/22 would be tough to beat. but if they were grizzlies or rhinos, i'd want something a bit bigger..

If you factor this in, I would probably just have a Glock 17 and an AK-47. Ammo is abundant and both are utterly reliable with minimal maintenance. Neither are on my list otherwise.

I could easily get by without a pump shotgun and just use the Mini 14 for HD/SHTF.

All Ruger 10 guns
LCP
LC9s pro
MK2
SR9
Redhawk
10/22
Mini 14
M77 RSI 308
Red Label
and I'd prolly have to buy a SR1911 just to have a 1911.

No shotgun!! I could not do that. I would want a nice o/u just to fondle, if nothing else.. :uhoh: But i see that red label in your list! You just said no PUMP shotgun, which i can do. My 2 were an auto & an O/U.

I like Ed's list of 3 rifles, 2 shotguns, & 5 pistols. If the gun grabbers limited ownership to 10, i'd probably go with that.. Actually, i wouldn't. I would defy the law & go renegade or something.. ;)

Good list of rugers, too. They definitely have all the essentials covered. I'd probably go with an AR over the mini 14, & the gunsight scout bolt over your m77. And i'd have an lcr instead of 2 lcp's, but diversity in firearms is a good thing, which is why we can own more than 10. :)

Well as it stands no 10 gun limit so I have AR's also, my mini is a custom job that consists of a target model with the harmonic balancer cut off and I'll soon be adding a linear comp to it, while my one AR is slightly more accurate and has a bit better range due to a 1-7 twist barrel suited for 77gr SMKs the mini is very reliable and plenty for most engagements from 5 feet to 500 yards. And since I have a M1a scout the Ruger GSR left me flat I'd rather have my much lighter RSI with it's true 1-4X for any purpose it would serve. Also I have a LCR but would choose the LCP/LC9s combo as it IMHO is a better combo than the LCP/LCR or LCR/LC9 combo would be.

i'd sell everything and buy 10 colt ar15s, the excess funds would be spent on as many magpuls and as much lakecity 5.56 as i could afford.

1. Springfield M1A/M14
2. Armalite AR15 (M4 carbine)
3. Colt 1911 .45 ACP
4. Browning A5 12ga
5. Remington 597 .22LR
6. Remington 1903A3 .30-06
7. Beretta M9 9mm
8. redundant
9. redundant
10. redundant

870 12 gauge with one short and one long choked barrel
Ruger 10/22 standard carbine
M4 civilian version obviously
G26
S&W model 17 or 617
Yeah I know I need five more but can't think of any that would be essential.

1. Marlin 39A - .22 S/L/LR - Have it.
2. Colt 9640 (can I get a 6.8 upper with it?) - If I can't have two uppers, that works too.
3. NULA Model 24 - .280 Rem
4. Winchester M70 Fwt. - .30/06
5. Winchester M70 Safari Express/Alaskan - .375 H&H
6. Winchester/Browning 1886 REPRO (for better steel) - .45/70 - Have it.
7. Winchester Model 12 - 20 gauge - Have it in 12.
8. (Older) Browning Auto-5 - 12 gauge - Have it.
9. S&W Model 27-2 5 inch barrel - .357 Mag
10. Colt Commander - .45 ACP (or .38 Super) with .22 conversion kit - Have it in .45. Need the conversion.

I'm working on the rest...
So much redundancy here...

1. CZ 452, .22LR
2. Winchester M70, .375 H&H
3. BCM/Colt/DD AR
4. Browning Hi-power or CZ-75 SA
5. Winchester M12
6-10 are superfluous. Would probably just rotate them to suit my current interests.

This is tough.

1. custom 1911 in .45 acp
2. s&w .44 mag revolver
3. high cap 9mm or .38 super if I went with a double stack 1911
4. 1911 built specifically for chambers custom .22 conversion
5. CZ bolt rifle in .308 win. so I have a good hunting trigger and the single set for target work
6. custom 10/22
7. Daniel Defense AR-15
8. M1 carbine
9. Henry big boy .357 mag
10. Mossberg 500 12 guage

I use the stuff on my list.
While I prefer a .44 for deer handgunning, I did take an 8 pt and coyote with my Python.
The old Ruger fingergroove 10/22 is pretty and pretty mean on pineys.
Used to shoot chucks on creekbanks with FNC para, but run an AR for the time being.
Commander is my CC rig, has been for 20 yrs.
Have had other shotguns, liked my Citori...........but prefer a "flat" gun and don't care if people turn their noses at my 870/1100 beaters.
At the end of the day I have more birds than them, with less shots.

Doesn't matter what you use. Just use it well.

I do like my dad's 1911 frame with Kart slide. Used to shoot squirrels with it when younger. But the Match Target Woodsman is my fave trail rig. Much more trim than my High Standard Sharpshooter.
Grew up shooting the cool stuff my old man had.
As a result I can't get too excited about newer types of stuff.

Only new gun I'd really like to have, long slide 1911 in 10mm. But we have no feral/wild hogs around here :(

10? Easy. Most folks in my family have done with less for a long time.

1) .22 rimfire rifle - my favorite is a Marlin bolt gun made in the eighties
2) 12 gauge pump gun - my pick is a Mossberg 500

most folks in my neck of the woods made do with these two, sometimes with duplicates, often with just the shotgun

3) .30 caliber bolt gun - .308 Savage Model 10
4) AR carbine Frankenrifle
5) Varmint rifle, mine's another AR Frankengun
6) SD gun, mine's a Springfield 1911
7) backup SD gun, RIA 1911
8) HD shotgun (Stevens 320) does double duty as deer slug gun
9) CZ trainer .22 for my son
10) .50 muzzleloader

If I could only have 10, several would be something quite versatile/multi barrel. Like a Sauer 202 or Blaser R93, TC contender and and over-under with several sets of barrels.

Effectively making many out of one. Guess an M16 or SBR AR receiver would be on the list too, can fire from rounds as powerful as the 50 BMG to a .177 pellet and just about everything in between, from the "single gun".

1 Wyatt Earp’s Colt .45
2 Hitler's gold 7.65mm Walther PP
3 Teddy Roosevelt’s Double-Barreled Shotgun
4 Simon Bolivar’s Flintlock Pistols
5 George Washington’s Saddle Pistols
6 Texas Ranger Sam Wilson’s Colt Walker
7 .22 revolver
8 semi-auto (9mm with .22 conversion)
9 .22 rifle (S&W 15-22)
10 T/C Contender with a few of the 40 available conversions.

The first 6 would fund a motorcycle, my retirement and life of leisure, and the last 4 would provide endless shooting fun.

Only *need* 4 really...

SCAR-17
Tavor (5.56)
G19
10/22 (16")

The other six, since the question was 10-
AK74 (any of half a dozen variants, wouldn't really care)
AK47 (any of half a dozen variants, wouldn't really care)
Mossberg 500
1911 (SA TRP)
Ruger Mk 2 or newer 4" .22lr
HK VP9, mostly because it's my favorite handgun right now.

I limited it to what I have on hand, otherwise my list would include a SAW and something with a M249 under it....

Can't say I own a fighting rifle, wouldn't even call my belt fed toys "fighters" now that I own them.

I have fought with a few getting them to shoot well though, does that count?

10? Easy. Most folks in my family have done with less for a long time. ...

I don't doubt that, but I wonder how you would feel if you really had to give up all of the fitness for purpose and dynamic range a good collection enables?

Then again I wonder why people are so obsessed with talking about "get by" sets of guns in the first place. Maybe people feel insecure and want to have a plan for scaling back? I don't get it. I enjoy talking about expanding capacity.

I could get by with a single flintlock pistol if I needed to.

Shoot, I could probably get by with this if absolutely forced:

IMG_4299.jpg

Do I really want to limit myself to .440 lead balls traveling 450fps and hitting with 50ish fp of energy? No! But if that was my only choice I'd rather have it than nothing.

Expanding your choices to any 10 is still limiting your choices. It is impossible to do a really good job covering all the bases (full range of concealed carry, full range of woods guns, full range of hunting guns, full range of sport guns, full range of teaching guns, full range of historical guns, full range of police guns, full range of war guns, etc.) with only 10 guns so what your choices reveal is mostly what aspect of shooting you are most interested in.

This is simple:

Rifles:
Small Game; .22lr -- my favorite is a Model 82 Kimber.
Varmints: .223 Rem -- preferably a Savage
All other uses: .30-06 -- my favorite is a pre-'64 Model 70 Winchester

Handguns:
Small game and general woods carry: .22LR -- I have several, but a Ruger MK II or III with a 5 1/2" bull barrel is hard to beat.
Self defense; .45 ACP in the gun designed for it, the M1911. I have several.
Big game and general woods carry; .45 Colt. Mine is a Colt New Service with adjustable sights and Herrett grips

Shotguns:
Model 870 Remington in 12 ga, 3".

Ed, I agree that while a list of ten is an interesting discussion, there's always "one more" we'd like to get. What's needed and wanted are two very different things.

1) Full-sized 9mm semi-auto pistol (G17, G34, CZ 75BD, BHP, Beretta 92)
2) Compact or sub-compact 9mm semi-auto pistol (G26, Ruger LC9S Pro, Springfield XDS 9)
2) AR in .223/5.56x45 (DD, Noveske, Colt, BCM, PSA)
3) 12g pump with the ability to change barrels (870 Police mag 3")
4) Full-sized .357 mag revolver (GP100, Security six, Python)
5) .308 bolt rifle with internal or removable mag (Savage, Remington 700)
6) AK in 7.62x39 (Arsenal SGL-21, Maadi Egyptian, Mak 90)
7) 1911 in .45 (Springfield Operator, Colt series, Dan Wesson custom, Wilson Combat custom, Para Tactical)
8) AR pistol or SBR in .223/5.56
9) AK pistol or SBR in 7.62x39
10) High-powered long-distance rifle in .338 Lapua mag, .408 CheyTac or .50 BMG
