My 12 YO son went through this. His choice was the .30-06, Rem 700 ADL w/ blk syn stock. Found it in a pawn shop for $325.
CMP keeps me in loaded ammo for my M1 Garand. So, the empties get reloaded for his hunting rifle. Plus, he uses my M2 ball for some "practice."
BTW....finding a...
I have a LEE auto prime (hand tool) and use it w/ Fed 210s when loading .308 Win. Never had a problem.
On the same note.....I have a LEE M1000 which uses the sort of same primer tray mounted to the progressive press. I've had a primer go off. Only a couple of primers actually went off not...
No clones allowed.
"Condition." A lot of them have been well used.
Hey, If you don't.......some Cowboy Shooter will pick it up. You ever watch "The Wild Bunch?" Or, "The Professionals." Wanna try some real fun......slam fire it.
Aloha, Mark
I own both. Garand vs. M14 (M1A).......maybe it's all in my mind but, for less kick.....I'd take the M14 (M1A).
Sometimes, I wonder how tough those GIs had to be, to lug the M1 and fire it. They surely had a real tough time (compared to an M16A1). I happen to be watching the movie, "Go...
I use a liquid brass cleaner (Birchwood Casey # 33845 CCI). That way I don't have to buy a tumbler or vibrator, mess with media or the noise and dust. Then, spend time, picking the stuck media out of primer pockets and flash holes. And, not to mention, that I save electricity. Follow the...
If purchased from the CMP, HXP- Greek Surplus .30-06, is usually cheaper then, 5.56x45 NATO (M855 or M193)......at least for now. But, of course it depends on where you make the purchase from. And, there will always be an expection(s).
Aloha. Mark
IMHO........here are my tips for the LEE M1000 (it's like the Pro1000):
1. Mount your press on a sturdy bench.
2. Keep your press clean....free of spilled powder or primer residue....not to mention grit.
3. Lube the moving parts.
4. Now, is also a good time to tighten up loose...
The idea of loading in bulk is good........but, you also have to buy in bulk to make it work. Bulk is NOT buying: 1 lb of powder or 1000 primers and certainly not 100 bullets at a time.
IMHO.......one of the best places for on-line components (brass, bullets, powder, and primers) in bulk...
The troops are forced to go inside because, some ^%$# said we have to minimize collateral damage. You know……probably the same sort of ^%$# that said we need to win hearts and minds, in order to WIN THE WAR.

And....how much $ are you planning to spend, in order to have a significant stash of your favorite?
Aloha, Mark
PS.....I was at a Gun Show this weekend.....a guy wanted to sell his 7.62x39 Russian HP stuff, at over .30 a round. Jeeez........it ain't GOLD, you know?
I assume you're in American when the SHTF. So, IMHO......get an AR platform in 5.56x45...Why?
Where can you get ammo?
Where can you get magazines & other parts?
"Murphy Rules" in a SHTF situation. Stockpiles may be lost.

M14 Loads.....
and.......
PROBLEM IS....it's not all in just getting a load.....it's also in how you do your re-loading (technique). Then.....Your mileage will vary.
Aloha, Mark

...have the words to describe what is "pornograpy." But, I know it, when I see it. A "Saiga" doesn't do it. IMHO.
I bought my AK......Just to p*$$ off the Liberals in The Democratic Peoples Republik of Hawaii.

Saiga, plus the costs of parts and gunsmithing...
I wanted a commie rifle (AK) and due to import regulations and silly "Made in Amerika" laws........well, let's just say that.........I wanted to KNOW what I was getting. Any AK from a "commie" block country was fine with me........but, it's ALSO nice to KNOW WHICH counrty.
Aloha, Mark...
