Should I get a AR-15 or M1 Garand, for my next multi-purpose gun?
Yeah right. Dont worry. AWB failed once (in 04) and the D's have a long memory of what happened in 94. If they try it, my guess is it wouldnt be till a 2nd Obama/Clinton term.
You'll need an upper for it, which will be an assault weapon "conversion kit." This is #37 in McCarthy's version of the AWB that has been introduced in the house.
As currently worded, AR15s would be "assault weapons" and anything made after the ban would not be available for civilian sale, and since all currently produced ARs would be grandfathered in, there would not be a single AR that would not already be an "assault weapon"...thus, for an AR15, there would be no "conversion kit" since there is nothing to convert.
If purchased from the CMP, HXP- Greek Surplus .30-06, is usually cheaper then, 5.56x45 NATO (M855 or M193)......at least for now. But, of course it depends on where you make the purchase from. And, there will always be an expection(s).Ammo cost for the AR is a lot less.

I've been toying with an AR purchase (esp. if Uncle Sugar sends out checks soon). But I'd be torn to NOT buy another M-1 anyway with the money; most Garand owners will tell you the same I'd bet.
