It's cool as all get out fun to shoot.... Lots of fun. Freaks the neighbors out too. I keep mine on for hunting too since it has the option to lock down to prevent the bump and fire one shot on target down range....great trigger, better than my timney even.
People that hate guns will hate them no matter what you call them, they know what it is and they don't like it. The way to change their minds isn't by smoke and mirrors or semantics as the gentleman stated, but by providing more examples of the positive influence of guns in our culture.

The purpose of the second amendment is not to buy assault rifles or weapons that test antis resolve. The purpose is to have an armed populace who can shoot weapons they own.
Any weapon that suits your budget and is easy for you to handle and become adept with, preferably a long gun rifle is suitable for 2d amendment purposes.
I've killed a lot more meat worth eating with a .22 magnum than with a .22 long rifle. I've killed even more with a .22 hornet and .222 rem, and even more with a .223. See a pattern there? In regards to self-defense, I've heard some guys like it as a back up gun, but I'd pass on that altogether.
