I haven't loaded for the 500 so I don't have any first hand experience with it, but people download the 45-70 quite a ways and that's a much larger cartridge than the 500 Smith. John Taffin listed some light loads in American Handgunner. Of course some people wouldn't consider a 440gr bullet at...
I still like the good old Skeeter load. 7.5gr of Unique under a 250gr Keith as my favorite 44 Special load. I just picked up another pound of HP38 though, I'll have to try that 7.0gr load of yours Gordon.
Taurus makes one for their new lightweight 44, it looks like it could replace the blade on the Raging Bull, although it might be a little tall.

JHP's are often more accurate than FMJ's. For utmost accuracy you need to have a prefect base on the bullet. JHPs generally have more consistant bases than FMJ which usually have exposed lead at the base.
Then of course you've also got all the things already mentioned for why one load might...
Lil'Gun has generated the highest velocities in my guns, over 1,500 fps with a 158gr LSWC. H110 is good too, but for getting every last FPS I've found Lil'Gun to be better.
Interesting stuff, isn't it? They do those penetration tests every year at the Linebaugh seminar. I have the last 3 years results in a db to make it easy to compare the different loads.

What's reallly interesting this year is...
I have no idea what it would cost, but I'd see if Dave Clements would do the job. He does some great work. He has a message board on his site where he'll give you a rough quote for the work.

Dry Creek Bullet Works has a new 400gr Keith for the 500 S&W, it looks like a great alternative to the LBT designs that are more common for the caliber. I haven't fired it but I've been told it shoots very well. They're not listed on the website yet but they should be available if you ask for...
Hot?? That's one of the lightest 357 magnum loads available. Even Winchester only claims 1,295 fps for it, less than Corbons 115gr 9mm load. So even the lightest factory 357 load available is to much for it...sounds like they should quit letting their marketing department decide what ther guns...
That perfect shop sounds almost like Weapons Safety Inc...before they closed. http://www.weaponssafety.com/ When they were closing, and selling off their rental guns, they said they were going to re-open in a year in another location, hopefully they'll be able to do it.
Nice place, big...
Very wise advice! I've had 2 of the M85's, both worked perfectly, and a couple of their autos that also work great. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I wanted one (there are a couple I woudln't mind having) but if you really want the S&W and get the Taurus you'll still have a yearning...
Leadheads and Dry Creek Bullet Works both sell plain flat base as well as bevel base bullets. Look for the Keith designs. Either The 170gr from Dry Creek or the 168gr from Leadheads (same bullet, different alloy) would make an excellent choice for your 357, the 250gr Keiths from either for the 44.
Lil'Gun is great in the 357 using 158gr and heavier bullets. I've tried it with 110's with unimpressive results. Accuracy was fine with the light bullets but the velocity wasn't there.
Lil'Gun, 158gr LSWC, CCI SPM primer
17.0 gr 1,445 fps, 1.615" OAL
19.0 gr 1,559 fps, 1.615" OAL (over max...
Your velocities pretty much match what I've seen too, maybe a little lower but every gun is different. 15.0gr of H110 in my 8 3/8" M27 only did 1,300 fps with a 158gr cast bullet. 16.5gr with just over 1,400 fps.
I found that Lil'Gun generated much higher velocities than H110 in my guns...
With Dry Creeks 310gr Keith 21.5gr of H110 (twin to 296) at 1.749" OAL does 1,275 fps from a 6" S&W. A 300gr LTC at a shorter 1.639" OAL and the same powder charge did right about 1,400 fps from a 6.5" M44 Taurus, that one seems a bit on the warm side and I didn't fire very many of them.
I'd...
The 686 is slightly larger and was designed after complaints of the 66 wearing out to quickly shooting full power magnum loads. The 686 is no more accurate, doesn't have a better or worse trigger, it's main advantage is it's strength, followed up by the heavy full underlug to reduce felt recoil.
Beartooth Bullets has a new one they're calling the Sledgehammer that is along the same lines as the Thunderhead, a little more rounded though. It looks like a great middle weight hunting bullet.
