Regarding the range, there's one about 45 minutes away from me that has 300 yards available, and no restrictions on the big .50! Just heard back from them via email.
Picked up a .50 Barrett M99 "package" yesterday. Pics will follow as soon as I get time. It's the "desert tan" version. I replaced the Bushnell 10X that came with the package, with one of the new Bushnell Elite 6-24X 30mm side focus models. Barrett says they've held up well in their testing...
"$89.99 for a box of .30-378 ammo? ouch, that'd hurt more than teh recoil"
- That's why God made reloading presses:) Actually, the recoil's not bad . . . as long as that funny thing with a bunch of holes in it is screwed onto the muzzle end of the barrel.
You can literally feel a heat...
"One more thing. I have had more success with the Weatherby's shooting more accurately than the WSM's. Yes, the WSM can shoot as well, but they tend to be far more picky about loads."
- Huh? Neither of my WSM's are the least bit "picky". Why would they be? Shorter, fatter cases are, if...
Sounds like you want a "tactical" rifle that could be used for deer possibly? Get a Rem 700P (Police), in .308. Sounds like that's what you're looking for. The ability to hunt big game, good to outstanding out of the box accuracy (recent review I saw showed a current sample that averaged just...
Do yourself a favor where the .308 "AR" is concerned:
Look at the DPMS, rather than the Armalite!
DPMS makes an outstanding 20 round magazine, and their "big bore" AR's are consistently terrific shooters.
They're also very compettitively priced.
For what it's worth, I would never...
I own the collapsible .308 version with the beautiful machined-aluminum handguard. Have owned original HK's in the past.
Would rather have the PTR91 any day over an original. Outstanding detail and fit/finish. Mine runs perfectly. Get one!
See ya
All 3 of my VQ's shoot 1/2" or better at 50 yds routinely. Didn't know he was going to shoot in ARA match's? He asked about buying a high-quality .22lr. I assumed "fun" was a part of the equation. I've never heard of cleaning between shots described as "fun":)
Both have their place...
A Volquartsen is not even remotely . . . .
A "glorified 10/22". I promise you. They're also nearly as accurate as an Annie. In fact, they'll outshoot EVERY bolt gun out there besides the Annie.
And while you don't want to "spray and pray" with target ammo, it sure is nice to squeeze off...
I have the PTR91 KPF pictured above. These things are works of art, as far as the HK91 platform is concerned. I think they're far better-made that any true HK ever stamped out. The machined aluminum handguard is a thing of beauty. I would call it reasonably accurate, with a truly horrendous...
Here's a free handy little online resource. You can search their bullet library for the AMAX BC, etc., or plug in the #'s from whatever bullet you're using.

Thank you Hornady!
Timney makes a beautiful drop-in unit
for the DPMS .308's. Someone who knows what he's doing can turn their really nice trigger into a true work of art, too!
good luck
Guys, check out SSK . . .
Here they are:
http://www.sskindustries.com
I've got an Encore on order in .302 Whisper from them (7BR case necked up to .308 for subsonic, suppressed loads).
They can chamber for virtually any cartridge, do trigger jobs, etc. They use Shilen stainless blanks...
"Weight? Sure. Diameter? Nope; .45 Cal. rifle rounds use .458" bullets."
If you're referring to the .450 BM, it uses the same .451-.452" bullets that the .45 ACP and Colt use. SOCOM, .45-70, etc. are .458".
"Just another vote for the DPMS .308 Great rifle no matter the version you get."
Agreed, DPMS is the absolute best where "AR10's" are concerned. Very accurate, very smooth, and very solid. Just add a Timney trigger, and you are rollin'!
"A thumper gun for me is a nice Marlin Guide gun in .45-70 shooting 405 grain lead at about 1400 fps. Ammo easlily available or reloadable"
No doubt that's a Thumper. Now take the exact same thing and put it in an AR with 10 rounds in the mag that'll fire 'em as fast as you can pull the...
"Also is this round equilivant in power and size to a 45LC, 454 or 460??"
If you mean the SOCOM and .450 BM, they're very close to the .460 S&W from a long barrelled handgun.
"Thing is you have to buy a new cleaning rod."
A .17 cal boresnake pull-through is the ONLY way to fly with .17's. Volquartsen includes one with their rifles.
see ya
.308 definitely has a sharper recoil . . .
in a gun like the AP4 DPMS. I have one, and a .450 BM, and the .308 has more of a crack vs. a shove, if that makes any sense. Both are totally tolerable, though.
I actually have 3 DPMS .308's. I have the AP4, the .308B (heavy 18" barrel), and a...
