I built my backstop out of railroad ties, two layers deep and covered the front with tire treads (truck throw-offs picked up from the highway). Stops everything I shoot at it.

As for .243, I want another rifle so chambered. Nuf said.
As for the Mossber ATR, I've had 2, one in .308 and another in .243. As a hunting rifle, meaning after zero, one clean cold shot, it's as good as anything out there. As a plinker, it won't stay on zero after the barrel gets warm. Mine...
Arkansas Paul, for as much as one can check one in a fun store without actually shooting one, it was ok. I'm not a big fan of the stock but the rifle was balanced well and pointed quickly. It has a straight barrel and I suspect it won't be overly affected by heat like the tapered Mossberg...
I could have bought this one with a Bushnell sportsman on it for $275.
I've had a Mossberg ATR in .308 and another in .243. Both zeroed fine and would have been good hunting rifles for 1 or 2 cold shots. However, after the second shot, as the barrel got warmer the shots would climb upward...
Thanks for the advice. I liked the weight and balance, but was leery of the action (felt sticky) and the magazine catch. I'm looking for a 20 inch barreled .243 to replace the .308 Mauser I hunt with now. I love the Mauser and it's been very good to me but it is heavy and the recoil is a...
Was looking at a Remington 770 in .243 today at the fun store. Almost put it on layaway. Thought I'd see if anyone here may have one and could give me a review on it. Seems pretty sweet.....

National Buy Ammo day was Nov 19th.
Funds being limited this year, I got a half case of Silver Bear 223 from Aim Surplus (already arrived, wow!).
What did you get?

I've had 2 Mossberg ATR's. Both were fine hunting rifles. My only problem was that the barrels heated up and POI moved as much as 6 inches in five rounds. Once zeroed for a cold barrel they were good for hunting but no fun for range day.

If you replace the bolt, you'll have to re-headspace the rifle. You should disassemble the bolt you have and see what needs replaced. GunPartsCorp.com will probably have what you need to repair it. Sounds like a firing pin and spring and possibly a new cocking piece.

Last year I accidentally bought a box of Hornady 150gr 30/30 bullets sized .308. They are shorter than standard .308 and have the flat soft point nose. I loaded them to 7.62 Nato specs and found them to be very accurate and took my 7 pointer in one shot with a minimum of meat damage. I have...
At least you posted "out shot" instead of just shot.........
Don't feel bad...My wife shoots better than me with her 38 and sometimes my 45.....Good reason to behave, ain't it?

I did that research once back in the 90's. I found that in Alabama about 1/10th of the eligible population had a permit and about 1/10th of those actually carried on a regular basis.

In 1996, Quincy's resturaunts posted "No Guns" signs in Huntsville, AL. In 1997 you had to drive to Birmingham to find a Quncy's that was still open.
