    Why 32 h&r?

The phenomenon isn't as new as we might think. I'll toss out a bit of historical context for fun. Older folks remember the days when many people chose either a .32 S&W Long or .38 S&W (often called the ".38 Short") for home defense, because .38 Special was (1) "too powerful," (2) "only the...

    It's 1940, what's your CCW?

Vz 50 was post-WWII Czech design, behind the Iron Curtain.

    It's 1940, what's your CCW?

Possibly Johst envisioned the (FN) Browning 1910/22, but it was more likely the 1910 (FN) Browning he had in mind, and probably in caliber 7,65mm Browning (aka .32 ACP). The 1922 was a military adaptation of the 1910, a holster sidearm with longer barrel & magazine suited for a full grip, as...

.38 S&W defense ammo from BB is imminent!

While we're speculating, I'll guess: (1) 135g GDHP at 860 from 4" barrel; possibly a 125g LHP similar to, but more powerful than(?), the Federal Nyclad Chief's Special load (upon "mature reflection," I'll call this option less likely than 2 and 3 below). (2) 148g hardcast WC at 800-900 from...

.38 S&W defense ammo from BB is imminent!

Many of you have read about my amateur experimentation with the .38 S&W, aka .38 Colt New Police, .38/200, .38 S&W "Short," etc. Many of us have shared tales of woe caused by the unavailability of anything resembling defense ammo for our otherwise serviceable solid-frame guns. Good news...

    revolver for a lifetime

OK, just for fun, I'll toss in a 32-1 (2" bbl.) or 33-1 (4" bbl.) in .38 S&W. . .depending on how big my pocket is :-) I'd load 'em up with 158g LSWC for the 4", which shoots pretty much to point of aim, and the 200g slugs for the snubbie--a close-range defense proposition.

    Old ammo question

I'll join the chorus. . .it's no problem at all to shoot it. Any ammo may have a squib load or other malfunction, including brand-new stuff, so use the same precautions you always do and blaze away. The only bullet-in-bore experience I ever had was WWII .45ACP ammo, most of which fired just...

    .32 S&W Long Fans?

I had a 30-1 that was a great gun. I liked shooting it, and even my recoil-shy eldest daughter liked it. Although it went down the road in pursuit of other things, it had excellent penetration with a 115g LFN from Hunter's Supply--it drilled through 6 milk jugs of water. While it's no bazooka...

    Flaring a 38 Special Case

Stodd, I hope you have a loading manual for reference. . . ? I know they don't answer all the questions that come up, but they do a pretty good job with most issues we encounter. Also, they help you understand the entire process, and how each factor is important. I started with Lyman 45th...

    Round or Square Butt?

They both work for me in J, K and N frames. (Haven't tried L frames.) Personally, if open carrying, either is fine; concealed, I'd prefer round butt. Does it point well for you & fit your hand? If so, that may be your answer.

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

No problem on the .358s, I cast & size 'em--wahoo! :-) Thanks for the tip on the expander plug. WILCO. Now, I'll see who else needs a favor, a REAL favor. . . .like a 6" bbl. favor.

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

And Old Fuff, You'll be proud of me. . .I'm about to get a PPS in .38 S&W from "Revolvergeek" down in Baton Rouge. He shot it up here w/me on the "tests" a couple weekends back, which I still have to write up :-) It's a former RHKP (Royal Hong Kong Police) gun. Don't know why I'm doing this...

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

Does anybody have access to Textbook of Small Arms 1929, a British publication that evidently has good info about the original British Army .380/200g cartridge? It was just recommended to me by Ian Skennerton, author of "The Book" on the .380 Enfield revolver.

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

Chrono results, British Army Mk. 2Z ammo test, plus more "Greatcoat Shooting"! Just a short report tonight from the battlefront, as your correspondent is busy catching up on both shooting and writing at this time. More to follow soon on yesterday's shoot! LOAD: CIS .380 Rimmed, Mk. 2Z ball...

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

Radagast, I'll chrono the Mk. 2Z today. I've already chrono'ed the 358430, which in WW weighs 192-93g and 50-50 WW-Pb + tin weighs 197-98g. They chrono'ed at 630 and 639, IIRC. My 213-14g RCBS 35-200, a bullet designed for the .35 Remington rifle, clocked at about 625ish. Based on the...

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

OK, W.E.G., I guess you should call me "Grasshopper" from here on out. (Remember Caine on Kung Fu? :-) Since I'm a historian, I certainly don't believe that the latest is necessarily the greatest, so I qualify in that part at least. . . . Oyeboten, I have read & heard that pure lead is far...

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

W.E.G., Now at least I know not to try wearing an overcoat as a bullet-proof vest. If I had to wear one down here in Louisiana, I'd die of heat stroke even if no BG ever gets close! On a more serious note, I surely don't know anything about Zen, and I'm an enthusiastic shooter rather than an...

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

The "German Greatcoat Story" debunked! Many of you have heard of the report attributed to a British sergeant, who stated that the weak .380/200 FMJ ammo wouldn't even penetrate a German greatcoat. (Another instance, or version of that story, is reported above.) Well, after thinking briefly...

    .38 S&W with 200g bullet--penetration tests

Several developments: 1. Ordered the Skennerton book on the Enfield No. 2 today. Will advise when/if it provides good info on the cartridge. 2. Bought the only box of factory .38 S&W I've seen in 3 months, some Remington LRN. Will use it for "control" over chrono & vs. the long-suffering...
