    30-06 bolt gun suggestions

Shop around for a M70 Extreme Weather in that price range. Or a M70 Featherweight if you like walnut & blued steel.

    Rifle Retirement

You bought another wood stocked rifle to "replace" your current wood stocked rifle? Head-scratching. Huh? Why not have a stainless synthetic setup for poor weather & KEEP the 600 as your fair weather setup?

Ruger M77 Compact Rifle, anyone seen any lately?

The Compact is fairly common and still in production. The Ultralight has been discontinued for now. Those are a bit harder to come by.

300 win mag vs 338 win mag vs 7 rem mag

For what you are using it for, I'd say the 300 Win Mag is fine. No reason to go up in recoil with the 338.

    Hard choice to make?

I would sell the Savage and use the cash to fund a new McMillan fiberglass stock for the M70.

    Blemishes on Model 70 Win

You bought it used. Who ever owned it prior got some rust and cleaned it up with steel wool. Send it off to Eddie Fosnaugh and have it cerkoted. http://www.fosnaughcustoms.com/index_files/Page403.html

Buying a custom rifle. What to get.

Get it in a McMillan fiberglass stock, then you'll actually use it all the time. Buy a Remington SPS Stainless 30-06, replace the trigger with a Timney or Jewell or Rifle Basix. Have the full action bedded in Accra Glass gel and mount a Leopold VX-2 3-9X40mm onto Talley Lightweight rings/bases...

Does the Rem 740 have the same issues as the 742?

    I'm thinking of the 750.

Does the Rem 740 have the same issues as the 742?

I have read on numerous boards that Remington took steps to improve the jam o matic tendencies exhibited in the 742. I know of hunters who use the 740 with no issues. But I'd still rather carry a Browning Automatic Rifle.

You're "not into 30-30"? How does that work?

    243 VS 7mm 08

Barrel life is longer on the 7mm-08 vs the 243.

    I have a problem...260 Rem.

Buy a used 700 or one of the cheaper box-store 700's that cost $400 and have it rebarreled to 260. Simple enough.

    Rifle on a budget

    D. Cheap rifle with $300 scope Savage Axis with a Leupold VX-2 3-9X40mm?

Big and Slow vs Small and Fast

Speed kills effectively, as does foot pounds and large holes. A 223 is plenty to kill deer, and a 45-70 is more than enough. I think that most folks can agree that somewhere in the middle is great. A 6.5mm on up through 7.62mm is a happy place for most applications.

Just put an M77 Hawkeye on lay-away.

Get a Redfield Revolution and make your new rifle happy.

best hunting rifle to use open sights on?

If I was all in on using irons, I'd find a 1950's era Winchester 94 in 32 Winchester Special or 25-35.
