im in the market for a new or use 30-06 bot action. im willing to spend aroung 600 to 900 dollars. anyone got a suggestion for me leave a comment. thanks.

For that money you can buy any one of a number of good rifles brand new, some of them with cheap scopes already installed.

However, shopping around the used gun racks might just turn up a jewel at the right price and leave you enough money to install some better glass. Worked for me, got a very accurate 1950 vintage Remington 721 in .30-06 for about $200.

I have a post 63 Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. Nice trigger, very accurate, and inexpensive to buy as people prefer the pre-64s. I agree that the pre-64s are nicer, but the post 63 is a fine bolt action hunting rifle.

The current production model 70's are better rifles than pre-64's. Same with any of the Classics made 1992 to 2006. A model 70 Featherweight is around $800 and would be an excellent choice as an all around hunting rifle.

Remington Model 700. Check the SN to make sure it has the trigger recall taken care of. That recall has lowered the price on an otherwise fine shooting gun.

Or check out the Ruget New American...great deals with scopes at times..

When I think about buying a bolt action 30-06 the first question that comes to mind is what brand of rifle would I buy if for some reason I found myself without a rifle. Keep in mind that I have owned rifles and reloading ammunition for over 50 years. I think the best rifle for the money is a Winchester 70, and when I say Winchester 70 I wouldn't care what year it was manufactured. You just have to pay more for a pre 64 or a current new rifle. The strongest selling point for the Winchester is the many after market accessories that are made for them and the fact that almost any gunsmith can work on them. eBay is loaded with Model 70 parts, especially for the pre 64 version. Timney triggers, Pachmayr recoil pads and McMillan stock are available for an instant upgrade. Resale is also great, as you can buy a Model 70 30-06, keep it for 10 years and sell it for more than you paid.

Shop around for a M70 Extreme Weather in that price range. Or a M70 Featherweight if you like walnut & blued steel.

Probably wouldn't be too difficult to find an older Rem. 700. Try to find something with a wood stock, like the older ADL's. I've had several of those older ADL that shot under an inch with nothing more than a little tuning.

You could probably learn to bed it yourself, floating the barrel is simple to do, trigger adjustment shudl probably be done by a smith, might cost you $25 or so, lapping the lugs is simple, slap a decent piece of glass on it, and you'll very likely have a good shooter. I love getting my hands on those older one's, that's when Remington was building them right, much better workmanship.

But with $900 to burn, I wouldn't buy new. But if I were buying new, I would buy a custom build, might run you around $1800 - $2200 for a custom hunting rig (without the glass), which still makes for a great range gun. But you'll end up with a sub moa rifle right out of the box.

Then comes the reloading set up. Shooting is an addiction that usually leads to reloading, which usually leads to a life style.

After owning 1 savage .308 win, all my factory centerfire rifles are now savages... I would recommend an upper end savage if you want a new rifle!!!

There is a guy on the Facebook 700 remington traders group that has a 700 wood tech combo in 30-06 for sale for $350. It's like a new one. You could buy that, a Leupold, a time trigger and a good amount of ammo for $900.

Craig C I have been eyeballing those Rugers for a while. I'm not in a position to buy right now but they have been tempting me.

I recommend the Tikka T3 Lite as it has a 3 shot MOA guarantee, extremely smooth bolt, excellent adjustable trigger and a very sturdy synthetic stock, or the T3 Hunter if you prefer wood.

I wasn't really in the market for one but I knew I'd need an elk rifle before too long and at the price, I had to jump on a blued/walnut .338RCM.

I have a post 63 Winchester which is honestly good enough for any deer hunting I'll do around here but I was jonesing for one of the All Weathers maybe in .308 or 270. Something a little lighter but plenty for whitetail. Put a $200 vortex diamondback on it & I'd feel like I had a good deer set up.

Edited to add: I like blued steel & walnut too but I've never had a polymer stocked stainless steel set up. I want to see how the other half lives.

Winchester model 70
Howa 1500
Remington 700
All excellent rifles well within your budget. I currently have a Howa 1500 30-06 and I love it. The trigger is easily adjustable crisp and clean.
