I need to sell one of my rifles and cant decide which to let go of,my 1968 model 70 in 308,or my savage 110 in 30-06.they both shoot very well and are both in great condition. The sale is more about making space and not about the money, which would you choose to sell off?

The 7,62x51 is standard light machine gun round in much of the world therefore unless laws are changed less expensive surplus ammo will be available for the .308. Other than that I would keep Savage over the Winchester. I went to LGS and looked over many used rifles which included: Brownings, Remingtons, Winchesters, Weatherbys, Howas, Sakos,... They had one rifle I would pick over all of them. That was $300 Savage 11 'Trophy Hunter' with a Nikon scope.

Savage has came a long way in the popularity of its bolt action rifles. That is due to good barrels and the accu-trigger helped bring shooter to look at a rifle that was on the low end of popularity prior to the changes.

I am a 30-06 person ever since I bought my first rifle in that caliber. I have always re-loaded so the cost between .308 and 30-06 ammo was never a factor for me.

With all that said I am wondering about the Winchester Model 70 future and in particular ones with wood stocks. I think what I am trying to say is that the Model 70 may well bring better prices in the years to come if that is of any factor in your decision.

Bottom line for me would be keeping the 30-06 , assuming both are of about the same accuracy. 20 years ago I would have likely given a different answer.

The easiest to sell would be the Winchester 70. People tend to hold onto them, and I hear regularly about someone looking for an older Winchester 70 in .308. It should command a higher price as well, although you say that's not an issue.

You won't likely see another Win70 in .308 for sale, if you do sell it and regret it later.

I'd sell the savage. I like savage, but if you ever change your mind you could get a new one at just about any LGS, Sporting goods store, or even Walmart. The 1968 M70 would be harder to replace with the exact same thing if you ever changed your mind.

You could sell both and try to find something really special.

"Can`t find space." Both are really nice weapons. As you`ve indicated as well.

I can`t believe you can`t find space. It`s not like your trying to find space to hide
a ...tank.

You say it`s not about the money.............

Side that puppy (either one) under the bed. Down the road you`ll be happy you did! :)

I would keep the Winchester and sell the Savage as the Savage would be easier (and less expensive), to replace should decide to get another.

Problem solved:

Buy a nice rifle rack, mount a period scope and sling and look at the Winchester every day on a wall or book case.

Then-

Disassemble the Savage, goo it up and put it into a section of 8 inch PVC. Salt that away and then go buy something to take their place that defies quandaries with regards to making space as you'll use it enough to not ask yourself (or us) these vexing questions.

Or- lie to yourself that it's actually a "Pre-64" Winchester and problem solved.

Todd.

So you are making this choice to make "space" not money? I am trying to imagine a domicile that is so filled with objects that a rifle is being considered for removal. It is none of my business and everyone is entitled to choose their style of abode, but I have to ask; do you live in a broom closet?:D

Ditch the Savage. The Winchester will be more difficult to replace when you regain your senses and wonder why you ever got rid of a rifle to make space.;)

I think maybe youre right about just keeping them both,I'm afraid I'll regret it if I sell either one.must have been a moment of weakness,or stupidity,I was having.thanks all for setting me straight!

I have to agree with Tony K except for the selling them both part. I have a mod 70 featherweight in a 7 mag. It's not a pre 64 and in fact it is a push feed, but it shoots very accurately and looks great also. It would take a lot to make me sell it. It would be quite expensive to replace.

I don't think I would ever sell a great shooting rifle. I have lots of closets in my house with corners to stand up extra rifles until I could find some way better

Easy to do---------Do not sell either one. If my goal was to own only one firearm the choice would be between a 12 GA single shot and a 30-30 for a SD/ hunting application depending on location. If you do not need to sell for the money and both are good shooters then keep them and buy something new as well if that was your ultimate goal. Out of storage space?? Just get a bigger safe or add a new hidey hole.;)
