tell me about my S&W 4046

I just aquired a good-looking S&W 4046 in a trade and now I'm looking it over at home and I have noticed things about it that I never heard of before--it has no safety that I can see to begin with. It is a double action and if you have the slide back and insert a loaded mag it will load the...

    M-1 Garand questions

I am no real firearms expert, but in my town some think I am an expert, and I was brought a M-1 Garand to have me look at it to see whats "wrong" with it. The owner says the action doesn't "cycle" right. He says he fires one round and the bolt stays shut after it fires. The owner says he expects...

    Old 39 Marlin needs help

I have a real nice Marlin M-39 (.22) apparently--it has no markings on it that tells the model--it has an octogon barrel, curved lever, bakelite buttplate, looks ancient but in nice overall shape. The magazine tube under the barrel is dirty and gritty--it hasn't been off in a long time til...

    Can anyone ID this part?

Its from a top-break 12ga, it has no metal parts on it, it seems to fit wood-to-metal with a place for a fastener of some kind underneath in a cut-out with a curved bottom surface. Does anyone know what gun this fits?

    Gunstock wood I inherited

I want to discuss the gunstocks I got from my Dad when he passed away. He was a hunter and shooter all his life and aquired massive knowlege over his entire lifetime. Then when he retired he put out a shingle as a gunsmith. He was able to create sporterized custom rifles made from Mauser 98's...

Here's an odd item--can anyone ID these?

I got a box of gun "stuff" that was my Dad's after he passed away. I see these are for a muzzle of a firearm (handgun?), and there gas ports on both, but they are new to me--maybe they're recoil brakes or some such? The smaller one says "Herter's pat. pend"--the bigger one says nothing anywhere...

    Winchester .22 magazine tube ID

I have aquired a bunch of gun stuff from a relative who passed away and I am trying to identify a magazine tube, apparently from a Winchester, I'm guessing its a M-1906 because I have a couple of other parts for the same model. Here's the question: the follower doesn't protrude out of the end of...

    Winchester Model 88/100 magazines

I have aquired two magazine boxes (no followers) for Win M88/100. I am wondering if there is a way to make some other follower work in these boxes? I have made inquiries about buying followers and get no positive response at all. No one has any, and seem little interested in my situation. I...

    1917 project--I need advice

I aquired a Rem 1917 full custom rifle that was obviously done by a craftsman--I bought it from a young guy at a gun show who knew almost nothing about it, not even what it was or the caliber. But for $200 I took the plunge. After getting it home I separated the action from the wood and found...

    Early Centenniel abuse

I have aquired an elderly S&W Centennial ser.# 40xx, and it looks very near mint, but has a problem. Someone did a wire-cutter trigger job (shortened springs) and then it got fired fast and hard enough to show wear and loose fitting cylinder stop and distress at the cylinder notches. The...
