My model 94 has the two small holes at the left rear, and also a larger one on the left front that is used to mount the side mount scope. These are all factory holes and the rifle has never been drilled for scope mounting....the weaver side mount uses these 3 factory screws.

do yourself a huge favor and go for the marlin.....get a good used JM stamped marlin with a 22" barrel and you are in business, not only will you love the rifle, you will want another one....OR you can get a marlin in 45/70 and load it down for your wife to shoot....the other options wouldn't...
