    Cartridge Conversion in a Brasser?

OK, off the top I know you're not supposed to this (and I haven't). But the thought occurs ... I have a Pietta 1851 .44 cal Confederate Sheriff brass frame. My normal load is 25 gr of powder with a .454 round ball (about 140 gr lead). Since I load my own 45LC with 25 gr powder and a 200 gr...

    Reloading BP Cartridges

I'm new to reloading, so be gentle. Also, I know there are plenty of places I could ask reloading questions, but this has to do specifically with BP guns and cartridges. For SASS shooting I use two pistols (Colt 1860 Army and 1858 Rem using conversions cylinders), and a R92 lever action, all...

Help with front sight for 58 Remmie

Apparently dropped my Pietta 58 Rem, because found the front sight bent over. When trying to straighten it just snapped off. It always shot high, but now a proper sight picture is 1.5 ft high at 15 yds. I use this for Cowboy shooting, so need to adjust for just 15-20yds. Unlike the Colts...

57GPR sight on Great Plains Rifle?

Now being the proud owner of a right-handed Lyman GPR, I am considering adding the 57GPR peep sight. Thing is, I shoot it left handed. Is the peep centered? Or if not, can the sight be flipped for left eye use?

Gander Mtn GOOB discounts getting bigger

If you have a convenient GM that is tagged GOOB, their black powder products are now at 30% off. I stocked up on Remington #10 caps and some Pyrodex. FYI, those particular stores do not honor flyers, stack discounts, and no longer give veterans discounts.

    BP Shotgun loads

For SASS shooting, I bought some commercial shotgun BP loads for my Stoeger Coach. The box said 3 drams (is 81 grs) and 1-1/8 oz of 7.5 shot. These worked just fine on the shotgun knock downs at my SASS range. So, I reloaded the hulls, with exactly the same load using wool felt wads (no...

    Parts for Stoeger Coach Gun?

All of the online sources I've found do not carry the specific parts I'm seeking. I emailed Stoeger several weeks ago and no response. I want to modify my coach gun for CAS shooting but I want to get some replacement parts before I make the mods (in case I screw it up :) ). I'm looking for...

Tips, hints to keep caps on?

I shoot a Pietta colt 1851 Navy Confederate .44 in cowboy shooting. I have 5 cylinders preloaded for easy swap-out during the match. Using #10 Rem caps. Nipples get capped after the new cylinder is installed. I know the usual dope - pinch the cap, but this is difficult for my fingers. I use...

When does Cabela's holiday sales start?

Got a big "pre-black Friday" flyer from Cabelas yesterday, but disappointed no BP at all. I have read here that Cabelas has a lot of BP stuff on sale during the holidays. Does anybody know when that usually starts?

    GPR: .50 or .54?

Decided to pull the trigger on the Lyman Great Plains ML (percussion 1:60). I'm thinking .50 cal, I have no idea why. Might use it for hunting white tail, otherwise just for fun. So, comments? Reasons?

    Tap-O-Cap product review

Having seen the mention of a new tap-o-cap available here, I jumped in and purchased the tool along with the Prime-All kit. Here is the result of my efforts. Bottom line: Disappointed in results so far, as the primer powder does not set, and falls out of the cap. First, I made a test batch...

Opinions on the Hawken Woodsman by Traditions?

Asked some ML questions in another thread but this question got lost, so putting it in the title.

    Left Handed ML rifles?

OK, you guys have started me drooling for a muzzle loader rifle, so I thought I'd start a new thread about my question. I'm a left hand rifle shooter. While I can handle the casings from an M1 Garand flinging across my face, I don't think I'd like a percussion cap going off right at my left...

    Well, stripped the threads

on my 1851 Navy while re-assembling. Stripped one of the backstrap bolts (ext to the hammer). I can order new bolts, but have I done permanent damage to the frame threads? Anybody know the pitch/size of the threads? Can I dress the frame threads with a tap?

What is the real caliber of a .44?

Got into a "discussion" on another forum, guy was claiming that the Colt .44s (in my case a Pietta Colt Navy Confederate .44) was actually a .45 caliber. I argued that the ball was .45+, but was shaved off to .44 in the cylinder. He disagreed that much was shaved off. So, I used a set of...

    Anyone rolling their own?

Watched a couple youtube videos, then tried rolling my own paper cartridges using cigarette rolling papers and a bell point pen case as a guide. The results at the range were less than satisfactory, and the rolls turned out to be too fat, and I had difficulty getting them into the cylinders...

Pietta 1851 Navy won't come apart

This a brand new gun. It is so tight, I can't use the rammer to push it apart. I have to use some sort of pry to get it apart, then use a plastic mallet to get it back together. I tried lubing, but no joy. Any suggestions on how to loosen this up a bit?

    Broken trigger spring

I have a Pietta 1851 Colt Navy Confederate Sheriff, that the trigger started acting funky. When I disassembled it, the trigger spring had broken (the other side of the spring was OK). My first disassembly (thanks youtube). There was a lot of black gunk inside, which tells me I need to start...
