686 / M, 4" Apparently, from reading another post, this was a first generation revolver with the M indicating it was returned and modified by S&W. Also, the serial number is preceeded by the letters AHD. Guess I need to do some more reading about this revolver.

Yes, bought in 2006 it is the 617-5" with 6 shot cylinder. I've been away from the gun scene for a couple of years. Apparently the 6" only comes with the 10 shot cylinder now? Thanks for the link kle.
