I've seen several people fail to make 1k with 168 SMKs. I wouldn't bother with them unless you want a different load for 500 and 1k. I never tried anything but the 175 SMKs because they work. I push them with Varget.

It's even worse than that. As you observed the iron sights are useless but additionally the stock is set up for use of those crappy sights, not the scope they will be replaced with.

I compete for the usual reasons; to get some trigger time under stress, hone my skills, with rifle - to get immediate shot feedback at long range, and to have FUN.
