The Kansas legislature has just passed, and the governor is expected to sign, legislation permitting legally-owned suppressors while firearm hunting, and also allowing holders of concealed-carry permits to carry while hunting. Bowhunters have previously been forbidden to have any firearm in possession, and we have previously limited big-game hunters to having in their possession only firearms that were legal for hunting said big game (for example, you could carry a .44 magnum handgun as a sidearm while deer hunting, but not a 9mm or .45 ACP).

Senate Bill 152, reference it as SB 152 in the Kansas Legislature web site. I think you'll also find information on the website of the Kansas State Rifle Association.

I found the bill but can't find where the governor signed it. Nothing on the Legislature, Governor or Local Newspaper about the governor signing it. NRA is not reporting it as signed on their state update page. The bill does say this:

Sec. 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after its
publication in the statute book.

Does this mean it has to show up in their official Statutes? That is the way I take it. Until it shows up here it is not law. http://www.ksrevisor.org/statutes.html

As I said in my first post, both houses of the legislature have passed the bill, it is on the governor's desk and we are told by the Kansas State Rifle Assn that he will sign it. If I recall correctly it passed the KS Senate with only 1 vote against and it passed the Kansas House unanimously. As of this morning I have not seen that it actually has been signed. Assuming it is signed it will become effective July 1, 2011.

Bear in mind that this bill is not expected to change what is a legal firearm or bow for any game. From what I see the thrust behind the bill was allowing concealed carry for personal protection while hunting. I anticipate that the Dept of Wildlife and Parks (please note that I am not a Commissioner of the KDWP so I am speculating) will take the position that you may not use a firearm not otherwise legal for what you are hunting, to "finish off" an animal you wounded with the "legal" firearm or bow.

Outstanding! I always thought it would be hard to get a stupid law like that off the books because of ignorant attitudes folks have about something like suppressors... people get images of ninjas with silenced submachine guns or james bond spy wannabes out running around shooting deer, and many don't see a "legitimate" reason to own a suppressed firearm, but apparently the pro-gun sentiment up there in KS is strong, to overcome the ignorance and repeal those laws!

This is definitely a good thing... I know folks from KS who like to hunt deer and hogs with a suppressor, and have to come down here to OK to do it legally.
