    30-30 Speer 130 42 grains?!

Well I loaded some up. Just ran up to check for pressure signs not checking groups. No trouble getting 42 in and a bullet seated but it is clearly hot.

Speer does list it as compressed.

    30-30 Speer 130 42 grains?!

Speer is 0.01" longer. I see Hodgdon lists their max at 37K PSI, which is 5K under SAAMI max. Speer doesn't list pressure.

    30-30 Speer 130 42 grains?!

Hodgdon lists a max load of 36gr CFE 223 for the 30-30 with Speer's 130gr bullet. Speer lists their 130gr 30-30 bullet with a load of Hodgdon's CFE 223 powder at 42gr max. Listed velocities disagree as well. My question is, is there perhaps anyone here who has worked with this combination and...

Rem. 700 VTR vs Rem 700 magpul .260

Price a new barrel and maybe a trigger. You might be fine with the Remington. You will be fine with the Tikka. That's why the Tikkas are selling so well. My opinion is strong on this because I'm annoyed that a LH SPS is not the sure bet I want it to be so I can buy one.

    Which red dot?

You really have to look at them yourself. Spending money will get you durability, but which look best to the eye depends on the eye. The more expensive models happen to not look best to my eyes.

4” or 5.5” and what carry strategy?

General defensive carry is strong side on the hip. If you really want to carry a suboptimal gun, then why not a suboptimal carry method, but you're off in the weeds just having fun. I like my sq. revolver crossdraw with its longer barrel. That works great for sq. hunting, not defense. You can...

Rem. 700 VTR vs Rem 700 magpul .260

Tikka is pulling that part of the market because of Remington's variable QC. Roll them dice!

4” or 5.5” and what carry strategy?

Skip the N-Frames and longer barrels. The big guns are too big to carry all the time. You can get an S&W 69 .44 mag or a Ruger GP100 .44 Special. Hot .44 Special is the same as standard .44 mag. I carry these size guns regularly OWB in a leather holster on a sturdy leather belt. I recommend the...

A new taste is developing for a 410 side by side

.410 shells don't have enough payload capacity to go much past 20 yards. A really tightly choked one might do 35 yards if you're very lucky. At that distance, anything it will do can be done with #7 1/2s, and larger pellets are not enough in number to fill in a pattern. Once you start patterning...

Deer rifle for 12-13 YO, 6.5 Grendel?

30/30 hurts. It is the guns that fire it, not the ammo itself. I got one at eleven and was surprised some years later that my .300WM was more pleasant to shoot. It's kind of the same deal as those single barrel 20ga. Good grief is the recoil awful, much worse than my Beretta 12ga. And believe...

Deer rifle for 12-13 YO, 6.5 Grendel?

We have tried our kids with both .223 and 6.5 Grendel on deer. The Grendel is a good choice, and much better than .223 on deer. The .223 kills fine, but the blood trail is not what you're used to with the usual centerfire rounds. The deer will die with the .223, but some of them would have been...

    1-6x vs 2-10x

50' at 100 yards field of view is wide enough for 10 yard shots. That'll usually match up with 2x. I wouldn't go any narrower than that or you can wind up trying to figure out which part of the animal you are seeing through the scope. Elk can be shot close, too, and fill more scope than a deer...

    6.5 Grendal vs 6.8 SPC

Grendel throws high enough SD and BC bullets. 6.8 does not. Grendel has cheap steel case ammo availability. 6.8 does not. The only thing the 6.8 has over the Grendel in this scenario is provide a bigger launchpad for inferior projectiles. I wouldn't base anything on what the military might...

What Three Hunting Rifles Would You Choose?

22lr, 6.5 Grendel, 270 WSM. If I spent any time where brown bears roam, I would swap the 270 for 325. As it stands, these are what I already use, excepting my favorite 25 WSSM for most deer.

Why isn't the 7mm-08 more popular?

The sensible weight for 7mm08 is 140gr. The commonly used weight for .308 is 150gr. If you don't look into it further, there seems little difference to make the 7mm08 worthwhile. If you compare 140gr 7mm08 to 165gr .308, as is more sensible, then there's a difference to notice. Most never...

    budget over under

The trouble with the less expensive O/Us is inconsistency. You can get a good one or maybe not. If you live near an Academy Sports, you can get a Yildiz. The warranty is that if there's an issue, you drop it off at the Academy gun counter. They send it to Briley to be fixed. You pick up the...

Howa mini action 6.5 Grendel found

Nice. I'd have one, too, if the bolt weren't on the wrong side. Might get one "for" my five year old's first deer rifle anyway.

    A six shot J frame -- S&W M431PD

S&W does occasionally still do small runs of .32s. I picked up a recent new production 432PD last year. I paid for it as soon as I heard and waited for S&W to ship it out. The advantage of the 432PD over the LCR is it's smaller. The .327 LCR is too big for my pockets. I use GA Arms .32 H&R...
