Hodgdon lists a max load of 36gr CFE 223 for the 30-30 with Speer's 130gr bullet. Speer lists their 130gr 30-30 bullet with a load of Hodgdon's CFE 223 powder at 42gr max. Listed velocities disagree as well.

My question is, is there perhaps anyone here who has worked with this combination and relate what they found? I suspect Speer is closer to actual but at what cost in high pressure?

What's the difference in coal?

Speer is 0.01" longer. I see Hodgdon lists their max at 37K PSI, which is 5K under SAAMI max. Speer doesn't list pressure.

Speer hasa tendency to list powder charges that won't fit in the case. It wouldn't surprise me if this is one of those scenarios.

I've never used cfe223, but 42gr sounds like a lot, maybe even a compressed load. If I remember correctly the last I loaded was a little above 30gr of 3031 with a 150gr bullet that shot better than 4895. I don't remember the cases having a lot of room left.

My Hornady manual shows 38.9gr of BL-c2 for a 150gr bullet. So start low and work up and see where you finish.

Well I loaded some up. Just ran up to check for pressure signs not checking groups. No trouble getting 42 in and a bullet seated but it is clearly hot.

i load and shoot lots of 30-30 ammo each year, around 1,500 rounds plus. i shoot nra big bore lever action silhouette matches. i use two powders, varget and buffalo rifle for my loads. i use varget for the 125 sierra, 130 speer, and 170 sierra bullets and buffalo rifle for 150 and 170 cast lead bullets. i drop 30.0 grs of varget for the 125 and 130 bullet. fmj bullets are one hole group at 50 and 100 meters and under 1/4 inch at 150 meters. i had a old load for the 150 sierra bullet with varget, i think it was 30.0 grs.
