Kinda set on getting a 9mm comped and optic pistol

I’m looking at reviews of the shadow systems MR920P. Not inexpensive even before I buy an optic. Basically a glock 19 clone upgraded with compensator. Also looked at the larger Canik TTI combat. Anything else I should consider at similar price point?

OMG! 2023 deer season might have just changed

I have a great relationship with a landowner farmer. I deer hunt some great land that his family owns and some that they rent. My lease is paid with deer sausage, beer, and good will. Last winter I cleaned up a storm downed tree on the edge of the timber and got it off the crop ground for them...

Visiting Niagara Falls and border concerns?

My wife really wants to visit Niagara Falls (both sides) and upstate New York wine country. This would be an 8-10 day road trip. I don’t want to travel unarmed but not sure how to deal with the border. Yes, I know better than to try and enter Canada with a handgun! Wondered if I could leave it...

Modern Hunting Rifles- How much easier could it be?

I don't usually let a social media post bother me, but I foolishly watched too much of a YT video on "What not to hunt with" and I can't seem to get it out of my head. The guy was going on about his terrible hunting rifles, poor choices due to weight, accuracy, etc. etc. I wish I had never seen...

    Hunting relationships- 2023 season ahead

In many parts of the country (maybe most parts) if you want to hunt on prime private land, you have to pay. Buy a lease or join a club etc. Fortunately for me, there are some areas that haven't caught up with this practice. It can be hard to get permission, you have to have a connection, but...

Changed my mind on the “boys axe”

I always said I saw no use for a boys axe and had a gap in my collection between hatchets (up to 19”) and axes (28-34”). Picked up an old 2# Vaughn boys axe with a damaged 25” handle. Bought a nice 22” handle from Killinger before he got out of the Amish handle business. Finished it out with a...

Wild night in the deer stand

Illinois whitetail archery. Walked in last night and around a corner to my deer stand and CRAP! 4 deer and 6 wild turkey looking at me. Totally busted. Everybody but me ran to the next county. Climbed my tree and settled in. Cold wind and snow flurries. Watched 5 does and fawns feed across corn...

Illinois bow kill from my giant wooden deer blind.

I’ve had deer coming in to my apple trees which are conveniently across my driveway and next to my 1909 barn. I made a raised platform out of an old door and a couple sawhorses so I could shoot thru a window opening. Had my first opportunity last week and shot over the back of a big doe without...

    Data discrepancy Aa#5 .45cal

I found some forgotten 230g FMJ bullets. I’ve shot thousands of 200gr LSWC but hadn’t loaded FMJ for years. I have good supply of Accurate #5 so I looked it up in Accurates material (printed from their website). They said starting load 7.8 going up to 8.7 max (or was it 8.4?). No problem so I...

20g trap loads? (Kind of a good problem)

Hey all. I coach and transport and troubleshoot for our local high school FFA trap shooting team. Great group of students and they have to cover their own costs. We are a school district with over 70% poverty rate so we have a little bit of everything for shotguns and ammo. We just had someone...

    Bad night bowhunting

Got into my tree stand at 2:40 yesterday. At 2:45 a big buck walked across open field crosswind to me about 75-80 yards away. He was moving like he was injured. I tried calling with grunt tube to see if I could turn him around but he ignored me. 2 minutes later an even bigger buck followed him...

Is lead toxicity from hunting ammo real?

Local radio program yesterday had a wildlife rescue lady ranting against lead ammo causing toxicity in eagles and other raptors. She said the problem spiked when trumps pick for Interior Zinke lifted the ban on lead ammo. And that prior to that, ALL lead ammo was banned for hunting and they...

Gave away my favorite hunting knife.

yep, been thinking about it for quite awhile and yesterday I did it. I bought this handmade 4” drop point and leather sheath from the makers table at a knife show sometime in the 1990s. D2 steel heat treated by Paul Bos to a Rockwell 61-62. Cocobolo handle scales. The knife maker was Mel Sorg...

Coffee (yes I mean hunting related coffee)

My drug of choice is caffeine. I can’t imagine life without it. I admit it. I have done everything over the years from a battered old Stanley thermos with home brew to an enamel perk pot or cowboy brew over a fire. I’ve done Turkish and Greek boil, French press, instant, pretty much any way you...

Finally happened. Stuck a cleaning rod and patch. Really stuck.

Well after 50 years of running various things through various bores, I did it. I bought a can of some new foaming bore cleaner copper remover and thought I would try it on my highest round count AR. Worked great. Moved on to an old Winchester model 70 .243cal that seemed to also benefit nicely...

Best way to inventory gun collection?

i spent a good part of a day taking pics and recording serial numbers, details, history, and approx value on all my firearms. Right now it’s pics on a flash drive and paper but I would like to put it all on a flash drive and keep in the safe deposit box. I don’t have excel but have a windows...

First night bowhunting this year- went pretty well.

finally got out tonight first hunt even though season opened October 1 here in Illinois. Got into tree stand 3:05pm. 3:25 a doe and fawn came by and I passed up the only shot on the fawn. A hermaphroditic barren doe with a partial antler nub and no fawn joined them and wandered within 22 yards...

    Hatchet rescue

I spotted this sad little guy at a yard sale on the dollar table. My wife had picked up a couple things and the lady rounded down, basically gave me the hatchet. I'll clean it up and save it. The poll is not mushroomed and the handle is tight. The edge isn't bad. But the rust.
