    Shooting large powerful rifles

I live and hunt in Alaska. I use a Sako A5 chambered in 375 H&H for moose and eventually Grizzly. I avoid shooting from the bench except when necessary. I also can't comfortably shoot it from the prone. The biggest difference I make when shooting it is I sling wrap almost every time I shoot...

    Who carries a .44 Special?

I regularly carry a S&W 329PD 44 Magnum revolver with a 2.5 inch barrel. I carry it with 200 grain Winchester SilverTip 44 Special rounds. Does this count? My revolver is the Alaska Backpacker 4 series. Very similar to the Night Guard series. It's stainless steel cylinder is not black, and the...

    Does You Ammo Match?

Yes, sometimes I mismatch. I have taken to carrying a S&W M29 44mag revolver. Around town I load it with 44 Special JHP, my reload will often consist of a heavier better penetrating 44Magnum round. I live in Alaska. This just kind of makes sense to me in case I require something to take a large...

How much should it cost to reblue a revolver?

I don't mean to steal the thread, but I have a S&W 29-2 that is nickel plated. Some of the nickel is flaking off, especially around the crane. There are some other minor scratches and minor defects in the plating has well. Is it possible to blue this revolver? I assume it requires some kind of...

Firing 9mm with thumb over slide plate cover

I don't know about Glocks. But I have done this with my Ruger 10/22. I held my thumb against the charging handle to keep it from cycling. With subsonic ammo, it was easy. But with high velocity ammo it hurt my thumb. I was able to barely keep the breech shut. I would NOT want to try this...

    High-Power Rifles with Low-Power Scopes

I have a Pentax 1.5x-5x by 30mm scope on my most powerful rifle, my Sako 375 H&H. My other hunting rifle has my most powerful scope. A Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag with a 3x-9x by 40mm scope I prefer a lower power scope on most my rifles.

    One eye or two?

I try to keep both eyes open while shooting. I say "try" because I sometimes struggle with it. I find it easier to shoot with both eyes open with a rifle, than with a pistol. With a rifle, only my dominate eye can see the rear sight. But with a pistol, either eye can see both the rear and...

Let's see those SHINYS...Stainless or Nickel only for our viewing pleasure

My only shiny gun is my Smith and Wesson 29-2. Nickel plated with a four inch barrel. Sorry for the poor quality photo.

    A solid .454 Casull revolver?

My very first handgun was a Ruger SRH 454 Casull. I bought when I was first stationed in AK when I was 19 years old. I bought from a friend. It was a bit of a handful, but I shot it very often nevertheless. I probably put 500 rounds of factory ammo through it in the first two years. I...

Ever find something wrong with a NIB firearm?

I bought a S&W 329 PD Alaska Backpacker that would have light primer strikes about every other round. I brought it back to the store (Sportmans Warehouse) and they shipped it back to S&W. I got it back about 10 working days later. The manager said that a bunch of these revolvers were being...

Strobing flashlight as a defensive weapon?

I was deployed to Iraq a couple years ago. I carried my Surefire M6 (500 lumens) while working on the flight line at night. It worked very well has a spotlight for moving aircraft at night. Sometime, on a night with no ambient light, no moon, etc. we would go out on the flight line and play...

Change carry load based on season?

Does anyone else change their carry ammo depending on the season/weather? I live in Alaska, and naturally, people wear heavy clothing here during the winter. The summers here are actually very nice and most people can be found wearing shorts and a t-shirt. In the summer I prefer to carry...

    Calling upstate New Yorkers

I lived in upstate NY for a couple years. Flying into an airport with a long gun is not a big deal. The big thing to remember is that NY still has the AWB laws on the book. If your shotgun is semi auto then you may not have a detachable magazine, or a pistol grip, or collapsible stock. Pump...

What do you want to see happen...

I agree with RailDriver. There should be no permitting system to allow open or concealed carry. I believe the 2A states "Keep and bear arms". We have the keep part down, but the bear part is still wanting. I should be able to carry a firearm anywhere I want without asking permission from the...

Worst myths you've heard about guns which are meant to scare the general public?

"You need a permit to own a machine gun" I hear this all the time, especially from guns owners. "Silencers are illegal." "The AR-15 is an assault rifle, it even says so in its name. AR stands for Assault Rifle!"

    .50 cal BS I heard....

I was told on multiple occasions by numerous people that a 50BMG will kill without touching the target during my time in the Army. I even believed it when I was in basic training. I believed everything my Drill Sergeants told me.
