I have shot both and would lean toward the 870...if it came down to price the 500 is cheaper and still a good dependable gun..

I really like mine....some Mossberge 500 accessories fit it just fine...in fact I am looking to get rid of the pistol grip I originally purchased for it. (my wife said it was too hard to shoot with it on)..PM if you are interested.
