Hi guys

I just bought my first pump shotgun, a Maverick 88. I did take out the wooden dowel and now fits 5+1 3" shells.

Does anyone know where I can get any after market accecories? I'm thinking of maybe a folding stock and a barrel shroud.

Any other imput about this shotgun good or bad?

Thanks

It leaves a lot to be desired in terms or reliability...
I bought two for my teenage sons about 10 years ago; they still work fine, and we have had NO reliability issues.

I really like mine....some Mossberge 500 accessories fit it just fine...in fact I am looking to get rid of the pistol grip I originally purchased for it. (my wife said it was too hard to shoot with it on)..PM if you are interested.

+1

My Maverick 88 Security has never had any reliability issues, even when rapid firing slugs.

As for accessories, the Maverick is just a simplified Mossberg 500 and it will accept any folding buttstocks made for the Mossy, as well as the Mossy's barrel should/heat shield. It will not accept replacement Mossberg forends however.

It leaves a lot to be desired in terms or reliability, but isn't an altogether terrible gun.

Not!

It's a great shotgun, at a great price! Mine has performed flawlessly.

My 20" maverick 88 security 8 shot is 100% reliable. I have just passed the 2000 round mark with it. All it has done is get smoother with use!

Spoken like a person that doesn't own one. My Maverick has 700+ rounds through it. Buckshot, birdshot, and slugs and I have yet to experience a single problem.

Great gun, holds 7+1 in the 20" version and has plenty of aftermarket options.

I love mine.

Another vote for the "had one for more than 10 years with zero issues" crowd. Mavericks are a tremendous value in my completely honest opinion. I have several shotguns, but grab the Maverick more often than any of the others.

Anything that fits a Mossberg 500 will fit a Maverick, since Maverick is Mossberg's off-brand, made in the same shop by the same employees. If you go to either of their websites they proudly proclaim that the Maverick 88 series is a part of the Mossberg 500 family of shot-guns.

As for "iffy-reliability" comment, spoken truly like a person who never has owned one!

Most folks I know, buy the 88 , and run it bone stock.
Heck, most leave the plug in.
Nobody I know uses a 3" shell, not even for geese.

These guns are used for Waterfowl and Migratory hunting, so that plug stays in, and nobody gets a state and federal fine.
These guns also are used for home defense, property duty, riding in farm and ranch trucks, tractors.
They are kept in barns and shed...

Darn guns just work.
The only thing folks do, is clean the gun when new of factory preservatives, lube it, pattern it with various loads and just shoot the darn thing.
The same bone stock guns have been grabbed when there was bump in the night, or it was announced a prisoner was loose, that felled doves, squirrel, rabbits, shot 100/100 in skeet, felled ducks, geese and deer.

Software, not Hardware.

Thanks for all the feedback. I must say I did get a little nevous after the first comment but now I feel confident that I made a good purchase.

Thanks all.

My Maverick 88 started out (1990-vintage) as a standard "Woods-N-Water" shotgun with the magazine capacity reduction plug and a 28" Modified Choke barrel. It is now my HomeLand Security shotgun, no mag plug, wears the 18-1/2" cylinder-bore barrel and a butt-cuff w/5 slugs.

Goes BOOM! on request, every time.

The Maverick does have a couple of differences from the Mossberg 500, as noted above...fore-end assemblies do not directly interchange, and the Maverick has a trigger-group mounted safety as opposed to the receiver tang safety location on the Mossberg 500.

I've got the security model with the 7+1 capacity. It saw a lot of shooting and wear from its previous owner, and now has had a lot of shooting and wear from me. No reliability issues.

The topfolding stock from ATI has been great for carrying it around in the back of my car (I own a civic) or in the seat next to me. I'd rather shoot it with a normal stock, though.

I own a couple of Maverick shotguns and they are very good value.

Mossberg forends will interchange with the maverick BUT, you must change the whole assembly, including the action tube.

The only assembly that will not technically interchange is the trigger housing assembly because the Mossbergs use a top tang safety and the Mavericks use a trigger housing mounted crossbolt safety.

Even so, these housing assemblies will interchange if you don't mind not having a safety.
I don't advocate or recommend this practice however,,,
