I was looking around the other day in one of my local shops when I noticed some Winchester 3.5" shells loaded with 00 buck. What is the purpose of these?

I have to imagine they are for hunting, given the tremendous recoil from these size shells.

Deer. How much recoil depends on the gun. Remington's Versa Max claims 20 gauge like recoil with full throttle 3.5" loads. In a pump gun or single shot, yes, it's gonna knock the daylights out of you.

Nothing, or nobody has ever made mad enough to want to shoot them with something like that. I've tried a few 3.5" turkey loads and decided If it took that much power to kill a turkey I wanted none of it. I'd imagine buckshot would be about the same.

The 3.5" steel shot I've fired still has more recoil than I'm willing to deal with, but was much more manageable.

These are...

...popular small pellet buckshot loads for deer hunting along the Gulf Coast. Most 18 pellet loads of 00B run to 2.2 ounces @ 1100 fps. The Winchester load you mentioned has soft lead shot, coarse grind buffer and no protective shot cup.

Unfortunately, many hunters rely on luck and pellet numbers rather than properly pattern testing buckshot loads. This is no different than using a rifle that has not been sighted in!

Its a pretty popular load for hunting coyotes on public land where HI-Power is not allowed.
See if I remember right?
2-3/4 = nine 32 cal balls.
3-1/2 = nineteen 32 cal balls.

Work up to heavier loads...

...many make the mistake of tightening up in dread anticipation of recoil when firing at a stationary target.

Not quite:

"See if I remember right?

Not quite:

12 Ga. 2.75" 00B nominal .33"
8 pellet, 9 pellet, and 12 pellet loads are available.

12 Ga. 3" 00B nominal .33" 12 pellet, 15 pellet factory loads

12 Ga. 3.5" 00B nominal. .33" 15 pellet and 18 pellet factory loads

12 Ga. 3" and 3.5" Tri-Ball .60 caliber 3 pellet loads.

i use it on part of the farm where i am very likely to run into bears. killed a 605 there last year so id like to have the power while im in the brush

I use and shoot 3.5 00 buck for Deer with a modified choke in a Moss 835 Ult Mag.
Hell I use that gun for geese, turkey, you name it.
It kicks. Its also hammers geese like a sledge hammer (Black Cloud 3.5).
I enjoy the ringing in my teeth as I watch the geese hit the ground.

My Benelli pump is the worse for felt recoil and even it is not bad with the 3.5" shells. My Remington 453 with the gas system adjusted properly makes the 3.5" shells a breeze to shoot. I have shot a Benelli M2 loaded with the 3.5" round and it was not too bad considering how light the shotgun is.
3.5" all the way for them darn Canadians, OObuck or T shot.

You may want to check out Tri-Ball 3 x .60" buckshot from a Florida based company - Dixie Slugs down in Dixie County.

They work great on med range 'yotes

6X6pinz- where did you find a 3 1/2'' M2? I didnt know they made such a critter

My Benelli Supernova with a Limbsaver recoil pad makes these feel like I'm getting hit with a nerf bat by a toddler. I do use the 2.75" shells, though. Just because I think 8-12 pellets is already enough.
