I have a Bushnell Elite 1.25-4x24 and a Nikon Monarch African in a similar mag range. Neither are "true 1x" but it doesn't bother me for either one. Both have excellent glass and are well built and tough. In both cases I'm wishing that I'd bought more than one of each at the prices that I paid. Both use a German #4 reticule. The Bushnell is illuminated. I like a basic reticule rather than one of the tacticool combo ranging/CQB/zombie eradication things that don't really suit my purpose in a low power scope.
Just personal preference, but I like a little more magnification available on the top end for a hunting scope. All my hunting rifle scopes have a bottom end of 2-2.5x and go up to 7, 10 and 16x depending on the rifle and its intended primary use and cartridge that the rifle is chambered in. Dial it down to low power for stalking and dial it up if a longer shot is required. 2x worked just fine on a close up deer at around 25yds this year.
