I am in need of assistance in selecting a scope in the 1-4x22 to 24 areas well as rings.

First up is the parameters for the rings:

1. Quick detach with ability to return to zero after being removed.

2. Ring height at the same as the pic below. ( This is the rifle it is gonna go on, and want to keep the same low profile as the optic pictured.)
M14S with Arms #18 SR mount.

Here is the parameters for the optic:

1. Under 300 bucks.

2. Reliable/waterproof/repeatable adjustments.

3. Illuminated reticle with ability to be able to use the reticle regardless of if the battery is on or not. ( 7.62 ballistic reticle preferred)

4. Looking at shooting distances between point blank out to 700 meters.

5. Applications are target shooting and hog hunting in low light conditions, and any weather.

Here is 2 that I'm looking at.

Anyone have one, and how do you like it? Can anyone tell me if the reticles can be utilized regardless of if the battery is on or not?

I also have another project in mind, using an Ultimak M8 handgaurd rail mounted on an LRB M14SA, and want a red dot type that will co-witness with the iron sights.

An aimpoint with low ring is out of the financial picture, so looking at a Vortex instead. .... ( The SPARC is the one I would really like for this app.)

Any opinions on these..?

While I'm a thinking about it, I am also interested in using a vortex 2-7 Viper in combination with an M1A-A1 and Bassett mount. Anyone have one of these?

Thats all I can think of right now. Any help/1st hand knowledge/etc, would be appreciated.

I just ordered the Leatherwood CMR because it is the only 1-4 that has 308 calibrations within my budget. I have read some very good reviews on this optic, so I took a chance. I should have it this Thursday. I am mounting it on my RFB.

I have Vortex Vipers and can say their optics are good. CS is even better if you ever need warranty work.

here is another I found, but this one does not have an illuminated reticle...

my overall plan involves 3 different m14 type rifles with 3 different types of mounts.

1. ARMS #18 split rail mount. (This is the rifle I would to run an illuminated ballistic reticle on, such as the CMR, or DMS)

2. Ultimak M8 handguard rail ( A mini reflex sight that is low enough to co-witness with the iron sights.

3. Bassett mount ( Actually 2 mounts, as the plan is to zero 2 different optics on 2 different mounts for one rifle, as they return to zero rather well if removed, then re-mounted.) I'm looking for something such as the Viper for one mount, and havent made up my mind on what to run on the other as of yet.

The weaver you mention is a fantastic little scope for the money. I have just recently upgraded to a Trijicon TR24, but the Weaver did great in many 3 gun matches. I had it in an ADM mount on my AR - it is now residing on my .22 AR. Would well recommend the scope - however, I'm not sure it (or any 1-4 even, come to that) is really a good choice for out to 700 meters. You may wish to consider something with a bit more magnification on the top end and sacrificing some on the low end, depending on your priorities.

Regarding mounts/rings - I personally prefer one piece mounts, but I'm not sure if that's viable on an M14 as I'm unfamiliar with them.

I have a DMS on one of my ARs. It hasn't given me any problems, though I'll admit it hasn't been used very hard.

The Weaver sounds like a nice optic for one of my projects. Ranges out to 400yds for this one.

Very light in weight, and compact. I might use something like this on my M14s with the ARMS mount, and either the DMS, or CMR for the other with the Bassett mount.

all I need now is a set of quick detachable return to zero rings that can go along with it and not break the bank.

I'm lookin at Leupold QRW 1in(low) rings for the Weaver/ARMS mount idea.

SWFA stock # is LEU49853.

also looking at Weaver quad lock 1in detachable aluminum rings as well.
SWFA stock # 49046

What do you think would be a decent set of quick detatch return to zero rings that wont break the bank, are light in weight, and reliable enough for chasing hogs in the brush?

EDIT: another optic I am looking at is the Leupold 1-4x20 VX-1 shotgun scope.

The Weaver costs less, and it weighs out at 8.5 ounces with OAL at 9.1 in
The Leupold costs more, weighs out at....... 9.0 ounces with OAL at 9.2 in

200 for the Leupold
155 for the Weaver

Would the extra 45 buks for the Leupold be worth it over the Weaver?
