10/22 Bullpups

As one of the most popular .22lr autoloaders ever made, the Ruger 10/22 has enjoyed great success since its introduction four decades ago. The popularity of the Ruger is such that many accessories, such as heavy barrels and synthetic stocks, have been marketed to those who wish to "trick out" their 10/22s. But one modification I have not seen discussed is the bullpup configuration for the Ruger. Has anyone converted their 10/22 to a bullpup? If so, how has it performed?

I bought this muzzlelite kit, and tried it out for a while, it looked cool, but had a real crappy and spongy trigger, and the built in sights were awful, I mounted the red dot, but being 6" above the bore axis, zeroing at different ranges was an excersise in futility. It was kinda fun for a while, but I have since done the BBL/thumbhole stock build, and have been much happier with that. Outside of the looks, it didn't become compact enough to be much better carrying (while shorter, bullpups tend to be "bulky"), a folding stock would have probably worked out better.

Tough on a left handed shooter with shells popping into your eye and the bolt handle ripping your cheek. Bull pups are lame in the first place. I've never understood the appeal. What's the military advantage? So they're compact, what about use of a bayonet? Yeah, okay, the bayonet is obsolete. That's what they said about the gun on fighter plans when the F4 came along.
 
Alucard, your comments tend to support the stories I have heard about bullpup Rugers. Rough and creepy trigger pull seems to characterize these conversions. Can this problem be corrected? Perhaps, but I do not know of anyone who boasts about bullpup designs having smooth trigger pulls. The sighting issue is also quite troublesome as well. Thanks.

I think this bullpup thing is all about the looks of the gun.
Though it doesn't look like any weapon I know!
I think those AK lookalikes are much cooler.
 
I think a bullpup should be designed as a bullpup right from the start. If you just try to convert an existing rifle you invariably end up with an ergonomic nightmare. Sights that are way too high, springy triggers, safeties in the wrong location, extremely long lengths of pull and awkward magazine changes are just some of the problems.
 
The "appeal" of the bullpup design makes some sense, because having a compact weapon (smg size) with the barrel length of a larger carbine/rifle is nice...

But I have to agree with some of the posters above me. Bullpup weapons that are originally designed as bullpups are a good idea. Converting a weapon like the 10/22 to a bullpup configuration really has too many negative side effects to make the conversion practical or worthwhile for anything other than achieving a "tacticool" look. If you want your 10/22 to be more compact, you could start with one of the smaller models (carbine or compact) and add a collapsible or folding stock.
 
Ironwood designs has stuff for my FAL and AK that make me drool...


I just looked at the AUG setup and it looks DAMN nice...kinda pricey, but nice. :)

WOW. those stocks from ironwood are amainlgy beautiful. to bad there 1000.00 dollars!!!!!!!!
 
Never built one but shot a few friends . I just cant get past what it does to the trigger to have that long transfer rod grating , flexing , and dragging back to the action. IMHO it could be done well , but not at a cost anyone would be willing to pay for .
 
Ideally an electro-mechanical trigger would be the solution, where the trigger is merely a switch, and a solenoid actually moves the firing pin. Supposedly the new kel-tec bullpups have a decent trigger by working something like a pistol trigger with a really long trigger bar, or something like that, where the sear and hammer were behind the bolt. and a thin titanium rod connected the two

They also have a non positive ejection system that goes down a tube that can get bent and crimped .. not my thoughts on a " good idea "
 
I've shot the muzzlelite? bullpup and I was not very impressed. Although It was kinda cool/different, the factory sights were terrible and It honestly felt like a toy gun in a not so good way.

off topic: i think ak47 bullpups are uglier though. :)
 
alucard0822 whered you get the cool lookin flash-hider/muzzle break thing on yours i've got a 10/22 in the same stock and it'd be way cooler lookin like that i've got a 2nd one i'm going to do the bull barrel thumbhole stock thing to but the bullpup is a novelty gun for me
 
If you poke around on youtube, there is a video of someone who took an airsoft AUG shell and fit a 10/22 inside. Mucho slick.

almost completely useless, but looks cool, kinda like the pullpup in the first place. As a bonus, 50rd 22 mags are small enough that you can fit a pair in each mag pocket on your tactical vest, even with the trauma plates doubled up. The weight is substantially less than a full load of AR and glock mags and should give you a definite advantage when a tactical front roll is required to regain solid cover:evil:

Someone would set the solenoid to "flutter" and get the ATF's panties in a knot :p

Those MP5s in airsoft shells look neat until I read some reviews and it sounded like they were built like...well like cheap airsoft guns.
