I finally had a chance to fire my 10/22 after replacing the badly corroded barrel (with a new take-off factory bbl), new extractor, new hammer & spring, extended clip release, and bolt-release (all Volquartsen). In 4 shots (%$#& range was closed), I had two smokestacks. I cleaned it up, oiled (G96 milspec CLP replacement stuff) the bolt & recoil spring, and everything looked good to go. Before I go ape, any suggestions on where to start? It's always somethin'...

Is everything moving smoothly when the bolt is cycled by hand? You have done so much to it there might be several points that rub/catch and slow things down. Also are you sure everything is put back together correctly? These things are usually quite easy to work on. Trying the old recoil spring might be telling. It now may like a different type of ammo to work well. Usually CCI will function one well and be reasonably accurate.

The first troubleshooting step would be to re-install the original factory parts. If it works then you could replace them one by one with your aftermarket parts, test firing each time.

Check your magazines and all related parts. The left hand feed lip is the primary ejector. Worn mag, mag catch not holding the mag correctly, bolt drag on mag, etc.

Most of the time I have seen this type of failure on a 10/22 it related to the extractor.

I'd check the chamber. Has it been polished? Rough chambers may lead to rough extraction and thus failure to eject.

Change the ammo. Does it smokestack with all brands or just certain ones?

Try the factory extractor and extractor spring.

Do a serious cleaning of the bolt paying particular attention to the extractor, it's spring, plunger and its groove. The tiniest bit of oil collected by too much oil can cause stove piping. And change ammo.

Years ago had the same problem. Took the extractor out and filed a very small relief on the hook and solved the problem.
