I went shooting today w/ a buddy who brought his brand new 10-22. He brought a couple of those Federal value packs from Wally World. He had a few extra Ruger 10 round mags & had cleaned & lubed it before going to the range. He went through maybe 200 rounds....it seemed like each mag had an issue - either a failure to feed or failure to eject. He gave up on it when he could not get it to function right :( Is this typical? I always thought these things were suppose to be reliable
I have a 10-22 that I don't use much, but I don't recall it being such a PIA :scrutiny:

Try the remington value pack or any of the other brands. I don't think I have ever had a .22 that wasn't picky with at least one type of ammo.Try quite a few different ones. Don't put any of the super fast stuff through the 10/22 though.

I had a bulk pack of the Fed. economy rounds- big problems. Jamming all of the time. The copper wash on the bullets came off. I had two squib rounds, one of which split the barrel on my H&R 923. I finally disposed of them. They were not suitable.

You can fire any .22LR round, including the "hyper velocity" Stingers and such through a regular barrel 10/22. (Not a barrell with match chamber, though!).

Try other ammo. Buy several 50 round boxes if you can, see what works best. CCI Mini-mag, Rem. Golden bullets, and Federal Champion (not the above mentioned Fed. crap ammo) work well in mine. Winchester 10/22 functions okay, Winch. T22 functions well, too. Haven't tested for accuracy, though.

Hyper velocity rounds are OK

You CAN use Stingers and similar hyper velocity rounds except in the 10/22 Target model. The tolerances on the target rifle are closer and won't accept the slightly longer rounds. I use the Federal bulk packs almost exclusively and have never had a problem.

Try a bulk pack of winchester wildcats...plain white box.

For some odd reason,10/22s can be very picky at first with alot of different ammo.My unckle has one that has had a couple hundred thousand rounds through his.He never cleans it and I wonder why it would even shoot with so much gunk in it when I see it, but it does.

My 10/22 was also pretty picky when I first started shooting it. Typically at least 1 fail to feed in every 25-round magazine (the mag could have been the problem though).

The more that I shot it, the better it got, until I hit about 1200 rounds. Then it started getting extremely unreliable. A good cleaning did the trick and now it is better than ever.

It'll be fine. Shoot it till the sun goes down!

I shoot Winchester Power-Points exclusively & have adjusted the spring tension of the factory mags accordingly. Son & I shoot at least a brick apiece every spring on our annual Montana spring gopher sabbatical with nary a hiccup (we do clean them religiously).
