Looking for an entry level scope for general plinking and target practice for a Ruger 10/22. Any recommendations?

Define entry level?

Whatever you get make sure it is focused or can be focused at short rimfire ranges.

I have a custom leaupold 3-9x40mm with extended focal range from 10 yards to infinity and a finger adjustable elevation turret only, and a finer reticle.

How far are you shooting and what is your budget. These are just a few examples on my rifles

Ruger 10/22 - BSA 3-7X $16.88
Remington 700 - Bushnel 3-9X $84.99
Bushmaster M4 - Gamo Red Dot $39.99
Bushmaster 22 - BSA 3-7X $16.88
Serbu 50 BMG - Bushnel 2-10X $118 (about)

Depends on the range, really.

I shoot at 50' in my back yard with mine. So I've got a red dot on it. I stole the Aimpoint off my Trailside, so I've got a good one. But the $30-60 ones work fine, too. The dot might not be quite as round, but unless you get one with bad parallax, it works just as well.

I used a 3-9x Brand X (low end Bushnells or Simmons, if I recall correctly) to sight it in, and that worked fine as well. I'd want something like that for anything longer than 50'.

For general plinking, I probably wouldn't spend more than $100 on a scope.

I just picked up one of these from CDNN

Simmons Pro Diamond

Brand New • 1.5-5x20mm WA ProDiamond Reticle Scope • 3.4" Optimum Eye Relief • 76-23.5' FOV @ 100yds • 9.5" Overall Length • Weighs 10.75oz. • Full Windage and Elevation Adjustments in 1/2 MOA Calibration • Great For Rifles, Shotguns and Black Powder Rifles • The ProDiamond Reticle Covers a 14 inch "Vital Zone" at 40yds for Quick Sighting!

It is technically a shotgun scope. I bought because it seems to be highly regarded on the Enos forums for 3-gun. It is 49.99. The only scope I currently own is a Bushnell 3-9 on my 10/22, at high magnifications it doesn't give a very clear view (it is a 30 dollar scope). The simmons seems to be a much better scope and I think 5X is enough for a .22

I just bought a Bushnell 1.5-4.5x for a 10/22. The primary use for this gun is rabbit hunting in the sagebrush. You don't want much (if any) magnification for this. When a jackrabbit jumps out of the brush literally at your feet, 3X is way too much. 1.5 or 2x is about all you would want.

I think the scope was in the $60-ish range from Cabelas.

Go the the sporting goods store, and look through the inexpensive scopes.
I was surprised with the Tasco World Class. It was clear and bright and with a $10 rebate, it was $30 for the 3x9x40. It beat the BSA, Barsa's, cheap Bushnells, Simmons, and was as clear and bright as low end Redfields, Pentax's, Sightrons, and others in the $130 to $250 dollar range.
The best buy on a quailty scope would be the Zeiss Conquest line...a little expensive, starting out at $400....

Entry level scope? I would recommend looking at the Bushnell Banner. If you can afford it, I would recommend stepping up one notch to the Bushnell Trophy.

Excellent results using the BURRIS COMPACT 3-9X AO. Does all i want at 100 meters on target and rabbits.
Less expensive but ok is WEAVER 2-7X.
More expensive and really good is LEUPOLD RIMFIRE COMPACT 3-9X AO.

I got tired on less expensive and sometimes AS EXPENSIVE rimfire & airgun scopes. Now I only wait and catch first quality on sale and suck it up as I part with the money for something that WILL hold up for targets and field work.
