10/22 or Papoose??

Hi! Well I think it's time for me to buy a rifle. This will be my first and I will definitely be taking this to the range just to plink with. I have been looking at the Ruger 10/22 or the Marlin Papoose. Specifically I am looking at the Ruger K10/22-RPF which has the synthetic stock and stainless bbl so with both the marlin or 10/22, I will have the same look basically. If I am not sure when I can do some modifications to the 10/22, which should I go with? What are the pros and cons of each?

Personally I'd get the Ruger. There is an overabundance of aftermarket parts and upgrades and it's kinda fun to tinker with a cheap gun.

My experience has been with the Ruger. Deluxe stock, blued, 4x. (basically a blue and wood guy) Just had trigger smoothed and shot it. Accurate reliable. Use good ammo.

Papoose,personally no experience. My gunsmith says they are fine and accurate, ideal if takedown is important.

If you are eventually going to do some modifications, Go with the 10/22.

There are a multitude of aftermarket accessories available for it.

I am just going to repeat what has already been said, if you think you may every tinker with get the Ruger. I have one and it is fun.

If you don't need a takedown gun don't get the papoose. Heck I'd get the 10/22 no matter what, lol. Trust me, even if you don't plan to do any mods right now, you'll be kicking yourself later if you don't get the 10/22. There is just everything you could ever want for them, and at one time or another you'll want something and not be able to get it/pay too much for it if you have some other model .22...

Thank you for all the responses! Anything wrong about the walmart 10/22's? I am going to go and check out rifles tomorrow and see what local gun shops have in stock.

I've got them both and like them both. The Papoose is a smaller dimensioned firearm. For many folks it's just a little too small. The nice part about the Papoose is that the takedown is very easy. Fits well in the floatable case also. If you don't need the takedown you could substitute the Marlin 70 series (795,7000,795SS). The Marlins have a last-shot hold open feature.
My one Ruger wears a bottom-folder and a scope on it but even when it wore the factory wood it was larger. The other 10/22 in the safe is still as it came from the factory.
If you're only going to get one, I'd go for the Ruger if you plan to accessorize it in the future, otherwise go for the one that best fits your ideals.

It's hard to go wrong with the 10-22. There's a plethora of after-market products and it has Ruger reliability. My 10-22 is tough and reliable with decent ammo (Choate folding stock is the only modification). I haven't seen one in person but the Papoose is probably tough and reliable also (if my other Marlins are any indicator). When faced with tough choices like this, I generally try to obtain all the pertinent data and use logical reasoning to make the decision. Then I say "What the hell, they're both cheap. I'm buying both!"

The WalMart 10/22s are the same as anywhere else just cheaper. With the money you save you should be able to get a couple thousand rounds.

I wanted a take-down rifle that would easily fit behind the seats of my truck.

So I bought the Papoose. It looks a LOT better than the Henry. Stainless steel barrel, weighs 3.25 lbs. chrome magazines are plentiful, and it comes in that nice foam case that floats. Put it in the back of the truck or on the fishing boat and when you get the urge to plink with a rifle you can unzip the case and put the Papoose together in about a minute. I love mine.

This is probably a dumb question, but the 10/22's that I have seen so far are all tube fed...are there some that use mags?

all 10/22's are rotary mag fed. no tubes.
